He was dismissed from cal last years, spent the whole year not playing football then declared for the draft. He isn't an ordinary undraftee. He was cals star defensive player and was they're cornerstone. No wonder he is doing so well. If he wasn't taken off the team I bet he would have been a high draft pick. Great signing by hickey yet again

Dykes said he would have no comment on the matter until after Monday's practice, but McCain's issues did not involve academics or legal trouble, sources said.

But it’s fair to assume that McCain considered himself and his success more important than that of the team. And by booting him, Dykes made one thing very, very clear: That may have been OK under the last guy, but it’s not anymore. It wasn’t so much a personnel decision as it was a statement to his players and the Cal fanbase.

It wasn't because of academic issues, the source below is false people

What was he suspended for?

According to multiple sources within the Cal football program, Chris McCain is currently not with the team and has been suspended indefinitely, reportedly due to academic issues. This suspension is indefinite. McCain becomes the second player in two weeks that the Bears have lost on the defensive side of the ball, with tackle Keni Kaufusi having left the team last week.

The potential loss of McCain appears to be a huge blow - the 6'6" junior has been an emotional leader of the Cal defense. Last year, he and Kendrick Payne led the Bears in sacks, with 3.5 each for the season. Though he missed all of spring ball recovering from a shoulder injury, he was projected to be a starter under Andy Buh's 4-3 system, and seemed poised for a breakout year at defensive end.

McCain played two-plus seasons at Cal before being dismissed from the program for conduct detrimental to the team after four games of his 2013 junior campaign.

Seems he was in NC for his High School years at Oak Ridge Military...

That was the reason I originally thought he was suspended for, which is why figured searching would not really tell us anything, unless Chris himself at some point, says why he was suspended. However, The article above says academic reasons, well reportedly.

It wasn't an academic issue, as I read that on another website.

I'd feel a lot more confident in him sticking on the straight and narrow while on his path to stardom if truly the reasons were academically-related in lieu of any of the other options I could think of. So if true, IMO, that's actually good news and makes him even more of a diamond in the rough.

I looked into this a couple of weeks ago, and the only thing I could find was a post on another message board that said that he was kicked off the team for 'threatening to fight' one of his coaches.

This is false people

Except for the part where he lost his schollie due to academics. And the cheap shot at Goff at practice that caused a brawl. And the late hit at practice that caused a brawl. And the bowing after being ejected. And him challenging Blasquez to a fight. And his not having surgery earlier.

From another board- Maybe it was a combination. Actually probably that's what it was let's hope he can just look forward at this point. If he continues to succeed have a feeling he will talk a little about it at some point.

That's interesting. While it's certainly cause for concern that he seems like a total hothead, here's hoping that he can mature and get a better handle on his temper. If he can channel that passion and intensity into more constructive outlets, we will benefit.

I was afraid that he had done something criminal. Like stealing from a supermarket or raping a woman on campus.

Head coach Sonny Dykes made the initial announcement in a Sunday press release on calbears.com. Dykes discussed the situation in a post-practice press conference. When asked if the dismissal of the junior from Greensboro, N.C., was related to a specific event that occurred over the weekend, Dykes confirmed that it was.

“I told him I wouldn’t discuss it, so I’m not going to,” Dykes said. “It wasn’t just one thing, though — it was a series of things.”

According to several sources, there was a precipitating incident during the game against Oregon, but the dismissal was due to a pattern of behavior.

McCain had, during the summer, challenged then head strength and conditioning coach Mike Blasquez to a fight on the 50-yard line because he felt he was "disrespected."

McCain was also at the heart of several on-field dust-ups during the course of 2013 fall camp.

But his college career ended three games into his senior season when coach Sonny Dykes dismissed him for conduct detrimental to the team. “It wasn’t just one thing – it was a series of things,” Dykes said at the time.

McCain wouldn’t discuss specifics of his dismissal but said “it wasn’t a violation of rules. It was attitude. I got a big head, and me and coach got into a disagreement. I didn’t want to be dismissed, but it was the best thing I needed to get my life back on track. I’ve grown up.”

McCain, who has gained 25 pounds over the past five months, received only two offers after the draft. He picked the Dolphins over St. Louis because of “location” and because linebacker coach Mark Duffner “and I really connected when we talked right after the draft.”

From what I've gathered it was some type of pattern of insubordination to either coaches/teammates and it was becoming detrimental to the team.

Not uncommon for a new coach to cut the cord on player. Sends a message to the team and it is addition by subtraction. It seems to have impacted Mccain in a positive way and he seems to be doing all the right things in Miami.
