Chris Perkins: Dolphins headed for mediocrity in 2025 before 2026 rebuild

Thought he had some valid points and gave props when deserved, the actual football talk starts about a minute in. I get what he’s saying about Grant, would’ve loved to trade down a bit and grab some draft capital, but I think the Fins had him ranked higher on their board than the consensus and didn’t want to risk losing him for a 3rd or whatever we we could’ve got back. On Jonah, that’s why I wanted to go into the draft after signing 2 starter quality players for the line so it wasn’t so obvious to other teams who we were targeting and I feel like we had to overpay to draft Jonah, even though I like him more as a player than the guy in the video. Also agree that Tua is a good quarterback but does need more than the average QB around him.

I don’t know how Tua would react to us drafting a QB that high, he’d have to know we intend to replace him and after signing his long term deal i believe he sees himself here long term…not sure if he’s the type to force a trade but it wouldn’t be good for the locker room that’s for sure. Also, don’t know how interested Tua would be in mentoring his replacement, he’s not a veteran on his last legs trying to do a solid for the team, either way it’s not a dynamic id want.

I don’t believe Tua would be a locker room issue at all, even in that scenario. You can say what you want about his performance on the field, but the guy has been nothing but a class act.

Think his 2026 salary became guaranteed on the 14th so it’s just a garbage article then.

You can check out the OverTheCap page now, you can’t cut him in 2026 without it costing you salary cap space.
Yep. I checked it out and the author is looking at June 1, 2027 but he wrote 2026. Looks like we will have Tua until at least the end of the 2026 season.

If he can stay healthy I’m happy about that. I’m just not confident that he can do that.

Exactly.

In Shula’s last 10 years as HC he made the playoffs only 4 times. He did win 3 games in those 4 playoff trips, but again, that was over 10 years after he’d been a HC the previous 16 seasons in Miami.

People nowadays expect instant gratification and long term success at making it to the SB. People use the Pats as their measuring stick, and it’s a good one, but people don’t remember they failed to win a SB over a 10 year period with Brady in his prime and some really loaded teams and choked a lot during that span.

McD has been here 3 seasons and has two playoff appearances. In one he had his 7th round rookie QB playing in Buffalo and in the other they played the eventual SB champs in -40F weather in KC (who also beat the Bills (in Buffalo) and the Ravens (in Baltimore) before winning it all against a very good 49ers team. And Allen, in Buffalo, put up a bad 86 PR with about 180 yards passing. Jackson put up a 75 against KC in Baltimore. Tua, in KC, and with backups all over, put up a 68 in his first ever playoff appearance.
Idiocracy

So, to clarify, you don’t think Miami can draft a QB in 2026 with the intention of sitting him for a year, with Tua as a bridge starter for that season?

Let’s just say…I strongly disagree.
I think you would have a much better chance of finding a franchise QB with a top 5 pick. Things would have to go really bad for the Dolphins in 2025 to be in that range in the 2026 draft. I guess it's possible if Tua misses as many games as he did in 2024 while the injury bug hits the team hard.

Depends on how things go in 2025. If the team fails to make the playoffs but still end up with a mid 1st round pick. IMO Grier, McDaniel & Tua would be gone in 2026. They can free up enough cap space by cutting Hill & Chubb to take on the cap hit created by cutting Tua.

I can't see a new GM wanting to keep Tua on the roster if the team is trying to put themselves in the best position to take a top QB in 2027.

As we have seen before, tanking doesn’t always work.

In this case it hasn’t worked because Tua ended up not being able to keep himself uninjured. If he had played in Buffalo, in the 2023 postseason game, the Dolphins would have won that game. They nearly won it with one of the worst QB’s I’ve ever seen play.
