See, Mosley is old enough to vividly remember what Marino accomplished during his Hall of Fame career and it just so happened that even though he was born in Kentucky and attended high school and college in Missouri, Mosley was a big Dolphins fan growing up.
So, yes, Mosley clearly was aware that Marino was on the field at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University during practices in mid-June.
“I noticed,” Mosley told The Finsiders. “I can’t walk up to him every day and go talk to him. I met him the other day and talked and he’s a nice, cool guy. I told him I definitely needed a jersey autographed ... authentic.”
It wasn’t just Marino that Mosley enjoyed watching as a younger. He can easily rattle off several other prominent Dolphins players during the Marino era.
“Just growing up as a kid, I just always loved them,” Mosley said. “Dan Marino was my favorite player, that whole team back then. Keith Byars, Mark Clayton, Bryan Cox, Zach Thomas, I can name a lot of people. Dan, he was my guy. That’s who I watched and it was just wonderful just to watch him be back there in the pocket and just throw those bullets, throw those darts.”
He started a career-high eight games for the Lions in 2014 and helped Detroit finish the season with the No. 1 defense in the NFL in terms of rushing yards allowed per game and rushing yards allowed per attempt.
Now that he’s been reunited with former Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Mosley is hoping to repeat that kind of success in 2015.
“I think we’ve got all the potential in the world,” Mosley said. “We’ve got a lot of guys up front that can obviously fly and make plays. You’ve got two jets out there at the end position (Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon) and inside we’re pretty stout, and on the back end all the guys gotta do is cover, really. I think we’ll be able to handle our business up front and make a lot of plays.”
Ironically, Mosley’s first start with Detroit in 2014 came against the Dolphins on Nov. 9. Heading into the game, Detroit had the top-ranked overall defense in the NFL and the Dolphins were ranked third.

Although he never mentioned it specifically, one would think the idea of playing for his favorite childhood team contributed as well.
Mosley kind of hinted to it after one practice: “It’s actually kind of surreal in itself, but it’s wonderful at the same time.”
