Tight end Charles Clay has two more games under contract with the Miami Dolphins. The four-year veteran is aware anything can happen next offseason. But if Clay had his choice, he wants to sign an extension to stay in Miami.

Clay
"Just being here and knowing the guys, knowing the coaches, the city, this is definitely somewhere I want to spend the rest of my career," Clay said on Friday. "I was saying that the second I got drafted. Yeah, I definitely want to [re-sign]."

Clay, who will become an unrestricted free agent in March, is in the final year of the rookie contract that pays him $1.431 million this season. He was a sixth rounder for the Dolphins in 2011 and turned out to be one of their best value picks in recent years.
Clay said he hasn't thought about his looming contract situation much this year. His goal is getting healthy.

"It's not hard at the end of the day," Clay said. "If you don't play well, then you don’t get any kind of money. Your main focus has to be on playing well."

Clay can do himself a favor by finishing the year strong. He's been in and out of the lineup -- missing two games this season -- while also playing hurt at times.
"It will all take care of itself," Clay explained. "I don't got too much control over it anyway. ... I'm just going out and trying to play the best two games I can."

well if he takes a reasonable contract than he can stay lol. If he wants top TE money then he can walk

Well, then he better get faster, taller, open more and more healthy and then maybe

o'course he does.. we're the dumb franchise what pays way too much for mediocre talent.. yknow, the too short/too slow/can't find the endzone types.. that's why we still be "The Middle of The Pack"

I've heard interviews with him and he seems very humble and grounded. I doubt he tries to ask for big money...especially after the year he's had.

Pair him with a big TE in the mold of Graham or Gronkowski and he'd be awesome.

Although im all for keeping him regardless

He's a solid compliment TE/FB/H-back . . . definitely not a top TE but a guy who can make plays on offense. Would be a lot better with a more well rounded TE working next to him and the combo of Sims/Clay could work if we decide to focus on a big WR target rather than a big TE target. Plus we have a 5th round rookie waiting to play next year.

Maybe he doesn't fit the type of TE the new coach will want. He has played great and been one of a few players I get excited about when he has the ball. The good thing is that the NFL knows he's good too. So if a trade is made, it can work in our favor.
Overall, I say keep him for a good price.
He sounds earnest in wanting to stay but when his agent says he gets another million elsewhere, he be like, Miami who?

Good thing those grow on trees. Anyone would be good with those guys. Personally not overly inclined to bring back Clay...he's gonna get more than I value him at, gotta get some pieces that can stay healthy. Sims' emergence is definitely a pleasant surprise.

I like Clay at a reasonable price but I honestly have started to feel like Dion Sims needs to be used more.

He needs to show he can run the ball and block more as a legit full-back on some plays.

The reason why Clay wants to stay w. Miami is the same reason Hartline wanted to stay w. Miami.

No one else in the league would pay him so much to do so little on the field. Non-playmaker clogging up a key skill position.

Clay is to the TE spot what Hartline is to the 2 WR spot.

Get a real TE. And get a real 2 WR.

LD I'm with you on Hartline but I do think Clay is a good complementary player. He has value. Hartline only had value because we had no other options. Clay has been fighting with a knee injury this year and I definitely think it hurt his ability to run; the only thing that concerns me is that he's had the dropsies in 2014.
