"One interesting sidelight of Peyton Manning's contract is that the Colts really can't trade him. The Colts would have to execute a $28 million option before the start of the trade deadline. They either keep Manning and trade Luck, or draft Luck and cut Manning. … "

Someone is going to be available from these guys...

Funny that you posted this. I was driving to work tonight and heard that same thing about Manning and wondered whether that had been mentioned here on FH and didn't think it was.

If that is the case then it will make things EXTREMELY interesting if they do indeed finish with the first pick and we finish 2nd. I still feel that they will trade out of it for a bounty of picks. They have too many holes all over that team to not seriously take a long hard look at someone offering really good picks.

They don't have to trade him......Irsay can simply pay Manning his $28 million and then they can cut him (In February, 2012), and Manning would become an unrestricted free agent.

Yeah it's that simple, just pay 28 million (pocket change obviously) for no reason and then draft a QB that same offseason that will be the next Manning..

Its simple Manning can delay the $28 million option or rework his contract.

I seriously doubt they cut Manning. I can see them drafting Luck to sit behind Manning for a year then trading Peyton next off season.

They wont cut him. They'll draft Luck. Not hard to figure out.

I don't think they cut him either, but if their hand is forced I think cutting Manning would be the move they make. Sounds crazy to even discuss, but this is big boy business.

I think they only way this works out in our favor is if Luck steps to the plate and refuses to play for the Colts for the reason that he doesn't want to sit behind Manning for a year when he's watched Newton, Dalton, Bradford, etc., come right in and start. He and everyone else knows this wouldn't be the case in Miami. He would come in and start day one.

I don't care about Luck at this point. My team won 2 games in a row. Call me a fool, but I am hoping for 9-7 and a wild card birth. It doesn't hurt to dream.

I am more inclined to think that they will renogotiate Peyton's salary and trade him to the NFC If they want to start Luck immediately, but the notion of trading Luck or cutting Manning is unlikely.

Renegotiation of Peyton's contract is in the best interest of the Colts, absolutely.

But push comes to shove and you either have to deal Luck or cut Manning...I'm cutting Manning.

And I also agree that they deal him to an NFC team as well. No way do they want to deal him and face him in the AFC.

Minnesota would be a nice landing spot for Peyton.

I don't it how that is a either or situation... Since there is a rookie cap, they can keep both.

They could as I suggested let Luck sit a year or get multiple picks, which are much needed, by trading Manning. They are perhaps worse then the 2008 Lions and need lots of help.
