Miami Dolphins
Cap room: $13.1 million
Nick Saban's biggest problem was that he was indecisive. He'd waffle on decisions for the longest time, even though he'd put pressure on his staff to help him with those decisions. Consequently, he let the Dolphins' defense get old and he wasted a year figuring out the quarterback situation. Saban is gone and the Dolphins organization is rejoicing. New coach Cam Cameron comes in with a nice persona and an all-star staff. First he has to figure out the quarterback position. Daunte Culpepper should be the starter as long as his knee finally heals properly with rest and rehab. Joey Harrington may be a cap casualty, and Cleo Lemon is a restricted free agent who may or may not be back. The Dolphins will try to get more speed at the wide receiver position. They were slow afoot and lacked big plays. They have 15 free agents, including defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday, tackle Damion McIntosh, running back Sammy Morris and safety Travares Tillman. They could cut wide receiver Marty Booker, defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson and offensive lineman Seth McKinney. This team figures to have 20 or more changes on the roster. Culpepper could be the key, though. If he can become a good quarterback again, the Dolphins could be a contender. They will stay in a 3-4 defense after keeping Dom Capers as the defensive coordinator.

Interesting tidbit on Saban and his waffling, which alot of us tried to sweep under the rug while he was here, but now in hindsight see it was obvious (Y. Bell backing up Tillman anyone?)

Blind faithed supporters sweeped it under the rug. I had my suspicions on him the moment he didn't solve our QB situation.

How do you come to the Miami Dolphins, and by that same token, how do you hire a head coach for the Miami Dolphins that doesn't have a plan to fix the team's most ailing position?

He should have traded up for Alex Smith(I didn't like the idea but it had to be done) and he should have traded up for Jay Cutler or Matt Leinart.

Brees would have been wonderful but I don't fault the decision making process there even though the only thing that matters is the end result and in the end all who picked Culpepper, as I did, WHERE WRONG!!!

I think a lesson can be learned here... Do what you have to do to get the guy you want at ALMOST all costs. If it means giving up some picks... so be it.

I agree.

Any decision a head coach makes is going to make or break him so why not swing for the fences and if you miss, miss big.

Wannstedt swung for the fences with Williams and hit. If he'd had swung for the fences on Brees/Hassleback he'd probably have a superbowl ring or two by now.

Worked great with the Hershell Walker trade and the drafting of Ricky Williams ...

Williams put up 1500 back to back years. If we would have had a decent passing game to balance the abuse, yes, abuse of running Williams 25 times a game, we might have been Superbowl bound.

IMO, Ricky was so burnt out by the end of his last season he didn't care if he'd just burn out(smoke) the rest of his life. If we had not won the settlement he might of done exactly that.

I'm not saying it was the main reason he left, I'm pretty sure the failed drug test was key along with him not wanting to face the media scrutiny do to his shyness problems. But the punishment he was taking year in and year out had to have had some impact on his decsion to give less of a damn.

if you are refering to Dikta giving away the entire draft on Williams, he was right about the talent.

The Ronnie Brown draft was one of the "weaker" drafts in recent history.... You trade up to get a Vince Young type of player, not for Alex Smith. I was happy to get Ronnie Brown....but not as overjoyed as I was with the fins eventually got Ricky back '02
I think Booker has earned the money he is due this year, if anything ask him to restructure like Zach & JT have done on several occasions

QB is priority. We were one spot away from the top QB in the draft. Grow a pair and make the trade.

It would have atleast showed dedication to the rebuilding of the franchise. Instead, from then on, it was all patchwork.

The man thought he had a Super Bowl caliber team with a couple of moves. He was blinded by his arrogance. That's why losing was so hard and college was so missed. He didn't sell himself on the reality of actually having to build a team from scratch.

I think Ronnie Brown is a solid back and might become a pro bowl back, but QB is the most important position on a football team and SMith seems to be coming along nicely in SF.

Off topic:

Christ if Ronnie was thrown aunder the bus after a few games. Alex Smith would be run out of town due to our more idiotic impatient fans.

I'm gonna feel bad for Quinn if he comes and when he struggles in his first starts.

Back on topic:

This is old news, and yes Saban was a waffler. as Le******* said "He should have been a politician."

Im not saying Cpep isnt going to work but i agree ! Cam is a quarterback guy so he knows talent and if someone available RFA or draft , I would pull the trigger! give up picks ,players and just bite the bullet and pick up players FA.. Only way to do it! you gotta do it somehow , theres no other way to do it.. I know people will say no to giving up alot for a player is not good but how else are you going to do it.. look at the colts and what they spend on peyton, come on! we havent made the playoffs or done shi* .. why is that? We wont go after what we need ie(trade or trade up for a qb) blast me if you want but im right.. To many qbs coming in miami and not doing anything, except fiedler helped some.. did make some noise! say what ya want about him but atleast he had heart, just not all the tools..

well Clayton didnt really bring any new information to the table. I do agree with him saying that if Culpepper plays great then this team has a great chance to be a contender next year. Ricky, Ronnie, Cpep firing on all cylinders would be scary.

I knew someone might have thought that which I why I worded it "Drafted" i.e. New Orleans trading their whole draft in exchange for the chance to draft Ricky.

Not our own trade which was in and of itself lopsided (two 1st's?)

Trippin if you would take smith over young.Young would be hard on are team.FAST,STRONG,BIG ARM,TALL.

Alex is not even close too young.
