I have seen time and time again posters misunderstanding players and their correlating positions.

Common Misconceptions:

"Jason Allen can play FS/SS in a pinch"

No, Allen can only play CB and ST in a pinch.

"Chris Clemons plays SS"

No, Clemons is not a SS. He is a FS.

"Pat White can become the Wildcat and come in motion"

No, he cannot. His primary strength isn't hitting the edge and burning people. His strength is using his outstanding field vision and picking his holes when he can. This is one of the primary reasons for why he was picked, his field vision and awareness.

"Tyrone Culver can play FS"

In some Dime packages he can, but for the most part he is a SS.

Its not that much, but posters need to stop saying "player A can play in player B's spot.

appendix a

people need to stop saying: 'people need to stop saying'. stop it! just stop it already!

Many fans are uneducated about the different responsibilities of each position. Very few players are interchangeable in positions played. Jason Allen was one but it's hard to say the effect it had on him while they figured out how to use him.

i thought the biggest misconception was that Ted Ginn was a wide receiver

SS/FS...... while maybe not being completely interchangable, it is not unheard of for a traditional SS to play FS or vice versa. Also can't CB's once they get a little older and slow a bit come down and play either position (FS/SS) so that they are not on an "island" out there by themselves where they would constantly need FS help?
There are no absolutes in football.....but i understand your frustration.

The year we had John Beck at QB Allen, if i can recall, played both that season and he wasn't doing half bad. In a pinch, he could play either spot.

These are NFL athletes we are talking about here. Hell the Bills put a safety at outside linebacker due to injuries and he did fine.

Fact is, you are not the coach of the Miami Dolphins so you do not know who can play what position.

The Bills put a safety at Outside linebacker due to his inability to process the scheming and offense at a safety standpoint. On top of that he was a tad slow for the Safety spot.

These are NFL athletes that are trained for a position. Much like Clemons is trained for FS and not SS. Allen will never become a successful FS. His communication back there is below par and his ability to scan the offense and process it is below par as well. Dont become fooled with ints.

And no, he cannot play both in a pinch. Safeties and Corners are not the same nor interchangeable. There are some who can do that, and many who cannot.

Whether safeties and corners are interchangeable or not, Allen out of college and coming into the NFL was regarded as a Safety/cornerback. He has had time at both safety and cornerback. If injuries depleted our safeties, Allen would be able to fill in.

Obviously filling in is different than starting but I am confident that Allen would be better playing safety than some free agent safety we would sign mid season.

I hope you know there's a reason he was behind Renaldo Hill, Chris Crocker, and Cameron Worrell. The latter player not even in the NFL anymore.

how exactly do you tell whether a player is better suited for FS or SS if you're casually watching games? what's the difference in skills and responsibilities?

FS is more a Ball hawk, quick and fast, and a SS is a great tackler who can play close to the line, normally a grat hitter.

I didnt realize just because we are at a football forum we gave up our constitutional rights to speak our mind, granted some may not be making an educated statement its still a forum for peoples points of view.
