Ok Phinheads, I have a disclaimer here: I am not proclaiming anything. This is just a look at the stats and some possibilities.
Teams this year have had some success with starting backup QBs this season. The Eagles, the Chiefs, the Chargers (Rivers was #2 to Brees last year) and especially the Cowboys. After taking the 'Boys from Bledsoe, Romo has given Dallas confidence, a playoff birth, and a Pro Bowl season. What gave merit to the switch? Poor play by the starter, and a solid preseason. But how does that translate to our situation? We too have a backup that has come in to replace a struggling starter with a solid preseason.
Let’s look at Romo's and Lemon's Preseason stats side by side:
..............Romo....................Lemon
Yds..........833.......................450
P att.........92.........................60
P cmp........64.........................42
TD.............3..........................2
INT............3..........................0
Rate.........95.1....................102.8
What jumps out immediately is that Lemon performed as well or better than Romo during the preseason. Both clocked in a Completion % of 70, but Lemon had fewer Ints and a higher rating. Romo had more yards than Lemon, but threw 32 more passes as well. Had Lemon thrown the same number of passes, he would project out to 690 yds and 3 TDs, both are very solid numbers. But as we all know, the preseason counts for naught, so let’s look at some regular season numbers.
Now bear in mind that Lemon has a MUCH smaller sample size to pull from, which skews the #s a bit.
..............Romo....................Lemon
Yds..........2582 .....................202
P att.........305.......................32
P cmp........197.......................20
Cmp%.......64.6......................62.5
TD.............17 ........................1
INT............12 ........................0
Rate.........93.4......................90.9
Again, a couple of things pop up here. Both QB's Completion % went down, but both are still completing a good number of their passes. Romo has thrown 10x as many passes as Lemon and to, so you have to stay objective, but Lemon is showing promise. At his current rate, were Lemon to throw the ball 305 times, he would be on pace to put up about 1922 yds; compare that to Joey who would only reach 1757 yds at that point. What makes Cleo so intriguing is that he is putting up and OUTSTANDING QB rating. How good is his rating? Well let’s examine the three ProBowl representatives from the AFC and see where Lemon stands:
Manning-----------[100.9]
Palmer-------------[94.1]
................................... <--------------- :dolphins: Lemon would be here: 90.9 :dolphins:
Rivers--------------[90.5]
Big name QBs that Cleo Lemon currently has a better record than? Rivers, Brady, McNair, Hasselbeck, Favre, E. Manning.
What does all this mean? Lemon has not thrown nearly as many passes as some of these guys. But what he has done is show potential. So don't look at Sunday’s game vs. Indy as merely a game that determines draft position, view it as a look into the future;
Can Cleo Lemon be a starting Quarterback?
