Cleo Time in Miami ?

The MiamiHerald.com article

The Dolphins told impending restricted free agent Cleo Lemon they expect he will compete for playing time and discussed a new contract this week, agent J.R. Rickertsaid Tuesday.

I think the key phrase here is they expect he will compete for playing time. This could be for the starting or primary backup role.

Yep, playing time if the starter goes down (again) or during pre-season when we pull out our starter. But not as our starter. If we have to have Cleo as our starter, we will be having to do so because we will be right back where we were at the end of this past season.

I'm trying to figure out how this is a bad thing? I know there are some posters who are insistent that we haven't seen enough of him, but from what we have seen of him, he's performed well. Certainly well enough to have earned the #2 spot through performance. I'd expect that he'd continue to improve once he starts practicing with the starting squad on a regular basis.

He only played decently, but he looked much more alive than the other two guys.

He looked sharper under pressure and there was a noticable difference in the footballs velocity when he replaced Harrington...

He is younger & hungrier & CHEAPER. If he were to start we could spend more money on getting other players. We NEED more good young players...

I'm sticking with the prediction I made after Cleo's first game. We will go into the season:

If Daunte is healthy:

1. Daute
2. Cleo
3. Rookie

If Daunte is not healthy (depending on his condition):

1. Lemon
2. Daunte or Rookie
3. Daunte or Rookie
4. Reserve: Daunte

No offense but this dosen't say anything lending any insinuation that Cleo will be the starter in Miami.

I'd say this is a no brainer statement considering Culpepper's future is still a question mark and the other starter was less than impressive last year.

What exactly do you all expect the team to say about the position that has the most question marks linked to it?

We'll see what happens.
Actions of the team will tell exactly how ready they think he is.

Many stated last year the team was convinced in Cleo's talnet yet they went out and gave up a 5th round selection to bring in Joey Harrington. Hardly a ringing endorsement that they believed Lemon was ready to take control of a starting job. Of course people ignored that and kept pumping the next guy on the bench as a top talent "not getting a chance".

So this year again, we'll get to see how the team sees Cleo.

If the team is sold on Cleo being a QB of the future we won't draft a QB high and we certainly won't go after any higher profile Vet FA QB's that could compete for the starting job in case Culpepper dosen't live up to expectations either IMO.

Our offseason actions will give us a lot of insight into how confident they are in him.

Bro, for all we know, Cleo is already the starter in Cameron's mind.

I"m sorry but IMO this is a disastrous strategy for addressing what is arguably the single most important position on the field.

You don't bargain basement the QB position.
It's time this organization finds a top talent to be the leader of the team. Thankfully, I believe they will as Mueller and Cameron both seem to realize the value of having top talent at that spot.

Cam already has familiarity with Cleo, so I expect he plans to see Cleo compete with Daunte in TC, what else could they do? I seriously doubt Randy & Cam don't draft a QB, although I still expect Daunte to be our starter next year.

Based on what? He never started for him out in SD. He hasn't really seen him play recently. Cam may be up for giving him an open shot, same as everyone else, but not just given the spot. While I think Cleo can play well enough to be our primary backup, I don't think he's good enough to take us to the playoffs IMO. Hey, I could be wrong. But I also could be dead on target that he would be just another failed attempt at trying to find some "diamond in the rough" at the QB, rather than finding a true leader of this team which we've been lack on Offense for quite some time.
