Justin Gatlin equaled but did not break the 100-meter world record at the Qatar Grand Prix last week, the sport's governing body said Wednesday.

The International Association of Athletics Federations said a timing error in Doha gave Gatlin a time of 9.76 seconds, which was one-hundredth of a second below Asafa Powell's world mark of 9.77.

The IAAF said Gatlin's time was actually 9.766 seconds, and that should have been manually rounded up to 9.77.

The time has been adjusted to 9.77 and, pending ratification, will equal the record set by Powell on June 14, 2005, in Athens, Greece, the IAAF said.

That is garbage. It's not his fault there was a clock error. The dude walked around strutting his stuff like he just broke the record and then they say "oh well we messed so now your tied." They should not go back and re-clock the race IMO. If the clock person messed up, that's not them not the person running the race. I mean seriously, how do they determine the tenths of a second anyways? I ran track in Jr. High (didn't in high school because of baseball) and I always thought the timing was funky. Oh well, if he's that good he'll do it again. He said he wanted to get to 9.73 anyways!

couldn't they see who's time was faster without rounding up then give it to that person.

I ran the 100 meters in 9.0 flat when my neighbor's pitbull got out and chased me down the street.
