Gates has comparable speed to Ted Ginn Jr., the last Dolphin to return a kickoff for a TD. Ginn set a franchise record when he did it twice in a 2009 victory over the Jets at the Meadowlands. The difference between the two is where Ginn often headed for the sidelines if he sensed he was going to get hit, Gates is fearless enough to head upfield regardless of the coverage.

"My speed is my plus,” he said, “but I don’t always want to rely on it. I know it’s an advantage sometimes, because I can outrun people. (But) I don’t want to be known just for speed; I want to develop into an every-down receiver.”

Comparing Clyde Gates to Ted Ginn is a direct slap in the face to Gates. Ginn sucks, these two should NEVER again be mentioned in the same sentence. EVER.

They were contrasted more than equated. Same kind of size, blazing speed, but Gates seems like much more well rounded and should be WAY better. I think that in due time he'll be compared to Mike Wallace, not Ted Ginn.

I don't really want Gates out there on returns.. too important to our offense IMO (once we start to utilize him well anyway)

That sounds good in theory, but his biggest contribution this year may be returning kicks.

Ginn killed the Jets though and will always have a spot in my heart for beating Revis and confusing Westoff.

The NFL has robbed the game of kickoff returns. The "Ginn effect" is gone regardless of whose actually handling the ball.

Kick return skills are largely gonna be minimized this season, despite the occasional Harvin/Cobb exceptions and those that follow. I'm more excited by his speed in spreading the coverage and stretching the field. If he can catch even one long bomb every couple of games, with some respectable YAC instead of stepping right out of bounds, he'll be helping Henne tremendously. So long as he shows good hands and a willingness to push the ball up toward the end zone, he'll keep opposing D's more than honest which IMO is of more value than KRs.

wow u dont want our 4th wr out there on returns lol. U do realize the roster is only so big and its not unheard of to have your fourth wr out there on returns. Me i want to win so if he does it well then do it. I think way too many fans are assuming that clyde gates is gonna come in year one and make a big contribution catching the ball and the odds are as a 4th round rookie he will not do as much as u think
