Clyde Gates has Ted Ginn Jr.-like potential on kickoff returns

The thing is that he cannot help the fact that he was drafted where he was. I recall him being draft to return kicks. We were told that he would be dynamic as a returner. He was. He was expected to fulfill more than he was capable of much like Henne was. Our front office does a poor job of judging talent at times and expecting guys to carry the load immediately (Ginn, Henne, Daniel Thomas, Gates)...

Who needs Ginn when you have Davone Bess and Nolan Carroll returning kicks

Yea...thats where the real mistake was I think. Not replacing Ginn at all. IMO, Ginn was never going to get better here. The fans hated him, his teammates probably doubted him, ect. so they got rid of him They made no effort to find a new returner or speed threat though. Not that it mattered I guess. Speed in Hennings offense was damn close to useless.

Yea he played soft, but I had this argument with someone else. When you really think about the big plays by the Miami offense since Sparano and Ireland . . . I think Ginn is probably in over half of the top 10 plays. Mistakes or not, you don't get rid of that kind of potential and playmaking ability, and thats not even including the several kickoffs called back to BS and the deep pass at Houston that would of kept us in the playoff race in 2009 but called back by a phantom Lou Polite hold.

What he said.

We should be in the talent gathering business not sending it away for low picks.

Bill loved BIG players and had no use for speed. Stupid philosophy in this day in age.

Ireland is really good at flipping the bottom 2/3 of the roster no. 26 to 52 we've got solid players. It the 1/3 or 1 to 25 that Ireland has problems filling.

To this day I can't understand why they would trade Ginn once they got Marshall. Marshall is exactly the type of WR Ginn needed to be complimented with. Did Miami think they were replacing a #1 WR with a better #1 WR? We knew Ginn wasn't a number 1, he was good as a deep threat and a return specialist. Then the Fins still had Bess over Ginn on punts

I'm over Ginn though, I have been beaten to death by people on this board defending the guy . . . its done . . . heres to Clyde Gates doing his thing as the new deep threat and kickoff returner for the Fins.

I still root for Ted Ginn, and I'm still disappointed that we gave him up for a 5th rounder. I don't think he'll ever be a number one, but I do think that he can be a productive NFL receiver. It's not his fault that he was drafted where he was.

Ginn's a very good returner but that stepping out of bounds stuff got old.

Probably should have kept him to strech the field for Marshall but hind sight is ALWAYS 20 / 20

Just hope San Fran plays the Jets this year.

I always thought that we should have kept him for the KR/PR role...

But I assume his top 10 salary wasn't fitting in with our plans.

Now we have a garbage returner...

The NFL has robbed the game of kickoff returns. The "Ginn effect" is gone regardless of whose actually handling the ball.

Ummm "Ginn" took 2 to the house today. One Kick return and one punt. I think its still in full effect.

??? Its not hindsight its common sense. I thought the arrival of Marshall would have cemented Ginn as a Fin for at least another year since they are the perfect complement, and then he's traded 2 days later...WTF

Carrol (24.1 yds/r) had a better avg than Ginn last year. Gates or he will probably have a better one this year. For every TD Ginn runs, he has 20 that go no where. He was injured some last year, he will be injured this year. It could be, his kick off return against the Seahawks was a result of the infrequent practice kick returners had in preseason because of the new rules and a fluke. 23 yds/return for carreer isn't very good and that includes yesterday's game.
