What Does Nick Saban Mean when hes talking about Jason Allen's position?!?!
(On how much time Jason Allen will split between cornerback and safety) – “We’re probably not going to spend a lot of time with him at corner because we probably want to evaluate him as a safety right now. I know you will ask me is he playing stronger free? In my simple minded way of doing safeties, we play right and left. So that means if the formation is to him he’s the strong safety. If the formation is away from him he’s the free safety. It’s the only way that I really find that safeties learn all. It’s a little harder for them in the beginning because they’re really learning two positions, but if one guy goes in motion they become that other guy so why not teach them that right off the bat even though it’s a little more difficult. That’s what we’re trying to do with him. We’ll also playing him as a fifth defensive back or star. So he’s learning those thigs right now. And we’re not going to throw him any more pitches than that for now.â€Â

Derek Hagan caught the ball "decently well."

WTF does that mean?

Saban hardly ever heaps big praises on anybody, let alone a rookie in his 1st practice. Saban's always conservative in his assessments about players to the public. He always stays real steady, and even-keel about players.

Look how he talked about Daute Culpepper after we aquired him; look how he referred to Ronnie Brown's abilities, etc.

Maybe Hagan caught every pass, but not with perfect technique; therefore, Saban would say he caught the ball "decently well". Who knows, but I take it as a good sign...

Gotcha. But still, you either catch the ball or you don't. I can understand equivocating when praising an O-lineman. But when discussing if the guy caught the ball or not, this was completely un-enlightening.

By the way, I read the whole press confrence. I love Nick Saban.

The locker room is that way Vick :)

This NEEDS TO BE A STICKY! Im sick of reading people talking about FS and SS. Saban even says we dont play a true FS and SS, we play left and right. Both are interchangeable. Arrrrgh! KABOOM!

Saying he caught the ball isn't saying much at all. There is a technique for catching the ball well, although I suspect coming from Saban our new WR just recieved high praise.

Remember what happened when he said we had "decent" receivers? Chambers had 15 receptions the following week and caught the game winner.

It means that Saban likes his players to be athletic AND smart enough to adjust on the fly. Some guys can't do that, even if their speed and IQ are there.

I'll contrast this with JJ, who I loved as a coach. JJ wanted robots to be where he said, and do what he wanted. His system was rigid like Madden video game code. It seems Saban wants a strong system with players who understand it and can execute it without a radio in their helmet.

As a coach of a different sport, I find this impressive. It takes a lot of trust. In my experience, high school kids respond to this kind of challenge. In fact, I find that they play worse when you want them to be robots. I suspect a 22 year old isn't much different than a 18 year old.

Saban is a motivator. His lack of praise fires the players up and drives them to perform. I wouldn't be suprised if Saban had a lot of experience in psychology in college. He really seems like someone who'd excel in that field if he wasn't a coach.
