coaching change will make a bigger difference than any big name FA

All the great coaches know how to talk, to give motivating speeches. I think the Philbin hire was the right thing and before his time is over as a Dolphins Coach in 10+ years he will be known as one of the better speakers the nfl has ever had.

It seems to me that Philbin has more brains in his little finger then Sparano had in his entire body. Philbin seems to ooze knowledge while Sparano sounded and acted like a clueless buffoon.

It's still hard as hell for a coach to make filet mignon out of cube steak.

the colts went from a year in year out double digit wins and postseason team to the worst record in football and the top pick without manning and you want to tell me a qb like peyton doesn't make all the difference in the world??? well i guess agree to disagree...this team right now would be contending for a division champ and playoff contender if manning had chosen miami and provided he stayed healthy...he would have made all the difference in the world...philbin can be gods gift to coaching til he gets a qb that can execute his vision to the highest level its not gonna matter squat...we'll be treading water
like i said agree to disagree if anyone sees it any different...

He has to stay healthy first. Peyton can not tackle or breakup passes but, like Marino, he can siphon off FA monies so you cannot afford to re sign your own free agents... much less anybody else's. That IMHO is the biggest problem with a super star player. Sparano, probably a great man just not a great motivator or teacher... thus coach. My glass in half full, and hoping for more with Philben.

Even if what you say is true, is Manning for 2 years more important than making this team a long term winner? I don't think so...

I agree with you in that Peyton Manning makes all the difference, and could potentially take us to a 10 win season and playoff contention. However, look at the Colts now, the same team who made 10 wins and playoff births 9 out of the last 10 seasons is picking first in the NFL draft. Personally, I want a complete team, as someone stated earlier, similar to the Patriots. To have Peyton Manning come in and cover our blemishes with his in-game coaching and ability would just be misleading to the franchise. A 2-3 year window of brightness only to be reminded that our roster is not suited to sniff the cleats of our retired QB. I also do not think the Dolphins ever would have a shot at a SB, even with Peyton Manning. I'd rather save cap space and invest in players for the future, not trying to settle for mediocrity now, I just believe good development and coaching can lead to a more complete all around roster.

Manning will be knocked out this season, so this is a mute point. Ask Marino about his neck injury, thank god philbin and Ireland passed on the human bobble head doll.

Dan Marino Quote:
"That is a good question. Boy, I really struggled with this. This has been the toughest month of my life as far as dealing with playing football or retiring. After the season, I pretty much thought that I was not going to play anymore and I felt that way for a while and I think it was because of the physical aspects of the game. It kept coming back to how my legs felt during last season, going through the neck injury; not knowing whether I was going to be able to throw the football, and family reasons also, but Claire and the kids, they were great. They wanted me to play, be honest with you. Really, it was my decision, a family decision and a health decision."

ask yourself this...would the colts have finished with the top pick had peyton manning been healthy in 2011??? heck i'd argue worst case they would have picked in the 20's like they always do...the point is you add a peyton manning and he's healthy and plays to the level we're all used to and he makes everyone on that roster better...across the board everyone takes a bump up...everyone...

I can agree with that, but keep in mind the dropoff the Colts suffered when he left. That inability to succeed without him is why I think coaching and development are more important than adding one big name FA to a team. Good coaches put teams in posistion to perpetuate good players and good seasons. A big FA can't win a Superbowl on his own I don't care if it is Peyton Manning.

Being legitimate contenders for the Super Bowl for 2 years? Hell yes it's worth it.

You clearly have no idea what his injury was and what was done to treat it. He stands as much of a chance of being knocked out as any other QB. And comparing Marino's injury over a decade ago to Manning's today makes little sense. Treatment is far better today. Further, Marino's biggest concern was his legs, which was a primary reason for turning down the Vikings offer.

Also, Philbin and Ireland didn't pass on ****. Manning passed on the Phins. I can see this bit of revisionist history is going to gain momentum similar to the idea that Ireland "passed" on Orton; unless of course Manning lights it up in Denver, in which case the same people stating Ireland and Co. passed on Manning will quickly shift to the more accurate version.

Its not like there are linebackers who have had the same surgery and are playing football still.... but they take minimal contact lol...

a healthy peyton manning could take our 2012 sched and win at least 10 games with just the roster we have now...even before the draft...assuming we don't blow chunks in the draft its probably worth another win with peyton...so 11-5...easy

and at 11-5 you get in the playoffs and once you get there with a manning under center it doesn't matter who you play you will be in any game and never go in saying we can't win this one...thats how much difference that kind of guy makes... if peyton was here and again provided health holds up this fanbase would be in for one hell of a ride this season...good times a plenty...
