Cole: Capers only a one year deal.

I don't think that conclusion is warranted in light of the new information coming out about Smith. I think perhaps Capers has been signed to the current deal while things are getting ironed out but will get a more substantial longer term deal once Smith has found his new home and Capers can become the DC.

Well, even if he is only here for a year, he is here to mentor the other defensive coaches and they can promote from within. It's a great deal whether he stays a bit or not, I think.

I am sure he wants to be a head coach again, but until then he will be on our staff

No one is dumb enough to hire him as HC so what woul he be looking for next year? A DC w/ a diff team? This doesn't make sense.

Kind of like a Rookie QB sitting on the bench for one year while the Veteran plays, Muschamp can pick Capers brain and watch him in his coaching style, tendencies, preperation, play calling for a year and then IF Capers leaves, Muschamp can step right in and pick up where he left off.. not to mention that Muschamp will have been with the team for his 3rd season at that point and the players will have a pretty good relationship with him hopefully..

"However, Capers' authority with the team doesn't appear to be significant, given his contract. Capers signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins -- an indication that he would like to seek a different NFL position a year from now if one becomes available."

This article came out prior to his signing at all, but it's not a secret that he wants a HC job. With Smith leaving, I'm sure Capers will assume the same role as we expect...DC...this gives Muschamp another year to learn under one of the best...He'll be ready when the time is right. DC might even want to stay if the situation is good here...he could be part of something special, if things go as planned...

I agree. It's all about grooming Muschamp until Saban feels he's ready to take over the defense on his own.

Why would capers agree to coach in a place like that? it makes no sense, IF he gets another HC job it's going to be a few years down the road. When you have 2 opportunities and fail each time that sends out red flags.

As long as he does not make personnel decisions............

FWIW:I'll bet his employment gets reworked after his consultant contract ends.

Someone was "dumb enough" to interview him this year.

Dude, your pathetic Dolphin envy is really starting to shine through and its really starting to make you look silly.

It took him 3 years though and he had only failed once as a HC not twice.
