Commentary: A Tale of Two Mikes

I want to thank Muck for splicing a pic of the immortal Rich Kotite into that article. That would almost certainly be a Finheaven first. :)

I want Martz too, even if only for a year. :(

Good write up, Phil.

But I have no concern at all about the way or the reason why Mularkey left Buffalo so abruptly. That will in no way whatsoever impede his ability to call plays and draw up formations for us.

Nick Saban is the voice of the team. Mularkey will just have to worry about running the offense.

good read , i´m also on the MM bandwagon, mike martz that is

well written Phil. As far as the whole Buffalo thing, Mularky was nothing more than donohoe's "yes man". He should never have been a HC in the first place. coordinators personalities are often droll and never work in the HC spot where more character is needed for the prime position. The whole league is bent on coordinators being HC's when it should be looking for the next Cowher. A guy who throws down when you need to. A guy who isnt there to be your friend, but who drives you to greatness by pissing you off or pushing your buttons as needed.

I would never have stayed in any job where the owner tells me to fire all my assistants and deal with whoever we get you. That was none other than a power move by Levy/Wilson. The two old men have a huge problem on there hand. The draft will tell me where Buffalo is headed for the long haul. If they go for the quick fix, they will be right back where they started. They need a high character HC, I do not think they will get one. Not many out there. Im so glad we have Nick Saban.

The problems in Buffalo all belong to Donohoe and Bills fans know this. They can blame whoever they want after that for all offseason, but the guy who created all that was Donohoe. The Bills version of the soup nazi.

I would take Mularky over Martz. Martz is an ***. I do not think he is all that. I think he is when he has all the talent working on all cylindars. When St Louis had the greatest show on turf, they had all the talent at all positions on that offense. Any good OC can do that when you have that.

He took Marshall Faulk from a very good player to a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He took Kurt Warner from an NFL Europe refugee to a two-time MVP. He helped develop Torry Holt into one of the five best receivers in the NFL. There are plenty of OCs who wouldn't have gotten nearly as much out of that offense, and few that would have gotten as much as Martz.

until he took over as HC. then it all went downhill from there didnt it. Which goes back to my theory. These coordinators become HC's and they cant handle it cus they try to control everything. That is why Saban is who he is. He lets his coordinators coordinate and Saban coaches and directs the big picture.

Now that he has been a HC, his ego will get in the way. Saban dont want that crap. At least Mularky would be reserved and do his job and shut up. Martz would make some crack to the media behind Sabans back and screw the whole thing up.

Oh and Marshall Faulk was already a star before he entered the draft. Tory Holt was too. I give him credit with Kurt Warner, but then why did his play drop off with the same talent eventually? But IMO, Martz is power hungry now, you can see it in his eyes. Not a good fit with Saban. Saban would give him power and he would overstep his bounds sooner or later.

Agreed that Martz is an incredible offensive mind, however
I actually think both Faulk and Holt would have been fine on their own, that being said.

Incredible writeup Phil. That is a better article than most of the big-time;fulltime writers create. I have checked out your blog on occasion (when I get an extra minute) and I will be sure to check more articles posted by the BATMAN. Thanks for the insight into our future.
