Commentary: Attendance Problem? Look in your wallet

good job Matt, thanks ! IMO, one of the coolest things at the games is how many young latins are now partying in the parking lot. I think this is great as they are the future of the local fanbase and it has enhanced the eats.

Remember the 50% transplants from other states? Well who do you think makes up a large portion of the remaining population? South Florida’s immigrant population. Many are here working on creating a life for their family, so how may do you think they can afford the $300-400 NFL experience? Of the non-immigrant population, how much of the balance of the non-transplant, non-immigrant, population do you think can afford it? The volume we have to draw from to fill that stadium means that most of the fan base here does participate, and does contribute.

i live in illinois dont care, when we play the bears and rams im there.

I agree totally. I can take a guess that many of those that say the dolphins don't have true fans & we are the worst are immature adoloscents who don't know the value of a dollar. Sure, we love our team and all, but $300 is a weeks worth of work for many of the transplant Miamians. The games will ultimately sell out (through corporation purchases etc), and many reason to just watch it at home or at a bar for a much lower cost. Does it mean you are not a fan? No. It just means that you prefer to spend your hard earned dollar wisely while still following the team.
The rich of this country did not get that way by giving away their $ when they could easily have saved it by looking for alternatives.

Luckily for myself, I get in for free since I shoot the postgame conference for NFL films. I also get to go on the field and eat for free in the press room :-> But I completely understand if someone decides not to attend.

Good article. To bad none of the Bills/Jets etc are ever going to read it because they truely don't understand. Actually though it's the attendance and not ticket sales, because from what I understand our ticket sales are actually pretty good.

Inspirstional read. Great take on the parking income. The real deal with that is that we share the stadium. Those revenues are (even though the Marlins might not draw the same price as the Dolphins per game) year round. They better not rise when the Marlins vacate.

Good article. It illustrates yet another of the reasons for the article's subject.

This in particular caught my eye:

Until the team and the NFL bring this game back to the working people, which is where it all began when Walter Camp was writing the rules back in the late 1800’s for a bunch of athletic clubs, we will have attendance issues in Miami. Of course this will not happen. It can’t happen. Too many Armani pockets being lined with middle America’s cash.

With the growing reality of a shrinking middle class in America, where is the next generation of season-ticket holders going to come from?

Just to make a point...

Of all 13 games yesterday, only the Jets had more people at their game than the Dolphins did.

Prices are outrageous at pretty much every entertainment location. I worked at an amusement park here and the price for a 20oz coke from a machine was $4.00...the same bottle you can buy at a grocery store for $1. It's ridiculous.

Great article. I love Miami (the team and the city) and will definitely move there one day and support my team. When I watch a game in Pittsburgh or Green Bay, I can't help but get inspired by the energy of the fan base and the stadium.

P.S. 60 dollars for snacks!? Good lord, man!

thats why you tailgate and only buy water when u get in the game. i spend my money on the commute, so when im at the stadium i eat my tailgate food drink a few beers and load up on water. usually i get one water a game, 5 dollars a pop.

Well, i'm doing my part for the KC game. My family and I have a total of 15 people coming from Tampa. I am also going to the Tampa Bay game so hopefully we'll have a solid showing at Ray Jay of Fish Fans to spoil what looks to be a 5-0 start for them.
