It is one of Bill Parcells' favorite sayings, and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano gave it voice Monday morning:
"You are what your record says you are," Sparano said.
Parcells, who has become the franchise's Great Sphinx of a boss - silently imposing - couldn't himself have chosen a better time to resurrect the no-excuses phrase. But Sparano couldn't resist offering a caveat.
"I know in my heart that we're pretty close to be being a pretty good team," he said.
What is there to make of the Dolphins, who are 3-5 at the halfway point of the season? Are they as mediocre as that record suggests?
Or have they been predictable victims of a nasty schedule, and therefore better than their won-lost math indicates?
Miami's five losses have come against Atlanta, Indianapolis, San Diego, New Orleans and New England. Those teams have a combined 32-8 record. And only in the season-opening loss to the Falcons have the Dolphins appeared to be uncompetitive.
