COMMENTARY: Fallout From the Buffalo Debacle

"And if the Dolphins gave up on protecting Daunte Culpepper (which they did), why weren't there more short routes? If Culpepper had minimal time to throw, wouldn't quick passes be a good idea? After all, it takes less time for a short pass in the flat to develop than a long ball downfield. This is not complicated stuff, folks. If I can figure this out, chances are, Nick Saban and Mike Mularkey should as well."

MM had 32 games in Buffalo to figure it out. He never did. I wouldn't wait on him.

and it's one man's opinion, and that's fine. But:

Predicted record and order of finish:
1. New England (12-4), 2. Miami (11-5), 3. Buffalo (6-10), 4. New York Jets (5-11).

NE and MIA aren't that good; Buf and NY aren't that bad. That's just how it is. I mean, 11-3 the rest of the way?

Larry Coker - Fire him already. He has nothing to do with the Dolphins' 0-2 start, you say? Doesn't matter, he's that bad.

Further, the Bills are blitzing like there's no tomorrow, bringing extra rushers all the time....

Huh? We rushed 4 most of the time with an occasional blitz. Fewell does not blitz that often. We used to blitz a lot but no more.

The main problem with your assessment is that you assume that the Dolphins are great and the Bills are terrible. Unfortunately it seems that even AFTER yesterday some fin fans don't want to face reality. Your team is really not as good as the talking heads told you and the Bills are not as bad as they said.

BTW, our draft wasn't as bad as ESPN said either...

most are missing that completely... note the comments about the "hot reads" scatered about

"Gus Frerotte was very good at getting rid of the ball"

Frerotte was bashed incessantly on this site, and sometimes deservedly so for missing some open receivers. Say what you will about him, but the fact remains that he was rarely sacked last year (both a product of the offensive line playing well, and his ability to get rid of the ball), and he went the entire season without throwing a pick-6 (which is almost unheard of for a Dolphins quarterback, even Marino). He had a pretty nice TD/Int ratio as well. To be honest, I wouldn't have minded having Frerotte here to start the season, and then have Daunte take over when he was fully ready. Oh well.

I couldn't agree more.

Short passes? Yea, that fins went to short passes, not sure where the article was going with that incorrect info. Hell, I've read at least 5 posts complaining of the abundance of short passes.

Buffalo was putting like 7-8 guys in the box and they did stop Ronnie on a lot of plays. We were losing and we needed and still need to establish Dante.

Sorry, but if Dante had his legs, we kill Buffalo. So Miami isn't as bad as the the loss and Buffalo isn't as good as the win.

Well, you're bringing up predictions I made at the start of the season. Right now, 11-5 looks like a real longshot. And while I'm not sold on Buffalo, I'm at least willing to consider the prospect that they'll be one of those teams that wins ugly a lot, and suddenly, they're 7-7 and hanging on the fringes of the playoff race, while everyone wonders "how did THOSE guys get here?"

My bad. Ko Simpson obviously is just a very undersized defensive lineman bringing pressure from a different spot on the field.

What's the problem? I DON'T think Buffalo's that good. I never said Miami was great. But if ever there was a case of a team winning a game because they simply looked less awful than their opponents, it was this. Buffalo didn't look good, but they did the little things and avoided dumb plays, and that was enough. So good for them, they got a W. And maybe they can carve out a 7 or 8 win season by playing just enough of those games.

What's incorrect about it? Whatever short passes Culpepper threw were more by accident than anything. He checked down to a safety valve a few times, but had they actually been designed plays, the ball could have gotten out quicker, and maybe he wouldn't have been sacked 7 times and hurried God knows how many.

Yep. That's for sure. Of course, I've been blasted for a month for noticing that our OL and QB looked horrible. It's too bad the coaches can't seem to see that.
