COMMENTARY: Fins are not fooling anyone...anymore

This article needs to be removed from the site, because it rational and makes too much sense. :D

I think the premise that this team over-achieved last year is spot on. I was wondering the over day why Saban, who by all accounts has a very firey personality, has not gone ballistic on the team. The only conclusion I can reach is that he never bought into the hype and he still sees this year as part of the rebuilding process.

Yes, Nick's the greatest! Do you know, if we fired Saban, how many NFL teams would be standing in line waiting to give Nick the same total control 22.5 million package he has here?

I would bet zero.

Nick got that package based on the hype that he could turn it around in Miami. That hype does not exist anymore. I could see another team hiring Nick, but he would not get 22.5 million and I'm on the fence on whether they would give him total control.

You don't rebuild a team in one year. Nick had to clean up a bad cap situation, and now has to take that space he has created and do something positive this offseason.

If we continue to neglect the line we will have more fo the same.

Well said, Matt. Saban has had to dig this team out of years of neglect and anyone who expected this to be a 1-2 year project was overly optimistic.

I love this team and I fully expect Saban to live up to the hype.

Maybe I'm just being picky, but I'm annoyed reading the 'next' page after this article. The next page contains thoughts from last season (2005) what to look forward to in 06. In the latest article, it says SD was a nice win but they obviously overlooked us. Yet, in the article from last December (and as many of us did at the time) gushed over the fact that we beat such a top flight type of team.

I agree, this season is disappointing, but don't look back on last year and what we did and all of a sudden change your tune. I dont think the 1-6 start takes away the great effort they put forth against SD last year, ruining there chances of making the playoffs. Afterall, last year was last year...this year is year. Even some of the players are different and some of the coaches. I hate when I see things like that. Sorry for the rant....other than that, good article.

My thoughts exactly. I read the "next page" and saw a lot of interesting thoughts from last year that didn't coincide with the recent article. A good article all around, but after reading the author's thoughts on the previous year, it appeared he was treading water somewhat.

Ummm... Saban didn't "clean up a bad cap situation". He created one by signing high priced, big name older vets last season and added two high-priced, under performing QBs to the roster this season. Miami has no cap space this year, which means that the Fins are going to have a hard time competing in the FA market next year.

Actually, yes. Nick Saban was one of the most sought after college coaches in football. He's turned down numerous offers from pro teams. Does that make him a good Pro coach?? We'll see...but he was very much in demand.

I would have to agree with the numbers part of what you said...but I guarantee that there would be a lot of teams willing to sign him. He's very well respected within the coaching community. He does know what he's doing and we're just very impatient fans. Take a look at some of the more successful coaches in this league and tell me how many of them never dealt with adversity?? There isn't any. All of the great coaches had some bad seasons. It's just the way it is. Is Billick a bad coach? Is Fischer a bad coach? How about Knolls, Landrey (? spelling), Shula, Walsh??? They've all had bad seasons. And most of them didn't start off winning 9-10 games their first two or three seasons. It takes time. Saban is our guy and we need to give him time. 1 1/2 years is not much time to accomplish much in the NFL.

Actually, I think we are saying the same thing. The jest of the article was that last year we were indeed all saying something different. We were looking at the streak, win over SD and all believing that the first half of the year was an aberration. The point of the article is that that was flawed.

We bought into the hype without looking at the facts.

Your comment is spot on. Of course now it's easy to say we were overrated last year and the win streak meant nothing. But, where were all of those "reasoned opinions" during the offseason, or during the preseason? It was all" "Dolphins are going to the playoffs," "Dolphins are going to win the division," "Dolphins have passed New England," "Saban is god," etc. The only people arguing that Miami was overrated were the fans of rival teams, and they were all dismissed.

Now that the team is in shambles and the season is over for the Dolphins in October is when we hear: "Well, they weren't that good to begin with. It's going to take three to five years to fix the team."

Maybe the players just aren't that good or maybe the coaching staff is overmatched and has made very bad decisions. Whatever the case, nobody was making that claim until it became obvious that we were a doormat this year.

Yea, not being able to turn around a crumbling team with little money and no draft picks in 1 1/2 years really crushed his value.
