There's apparently more big stuff to the Dolphins' rookie cornerback, in other words, than his size, which is 6-4 and 215 pounds, according to the team's roster. And maybe Smith, a second-round pick in the NFL Draft, someday will be an imposing contributor to what the Dolphins are trying to do. Maybe someday he'll be a bombastic quote, too.
But not right now. Not yet.

"I'm not shy," Smith insisted after a practice session last week.

Are you suggesting that Sean Smith is the latter rather than the former?

not suggesting anything about Sean Smith. Smack talk does little to win games and I always prefer a player that talks his smack with play. My high school team won 42 straight games because of the play on the field not how much smack we talked.

Hmm. Well, I'm not sure who put forth the idea that smack talk wins football games. But whoever they are, they should consider themselves thoroughly disagreed with.

I know that talking trash doesn't win games, but it can make a team or player lose focus. I have always been really bad about running my mouth when playing any kind of sport. Sometimes it comes back on you, but more often than not, if I can get into somebody's head, they are mine. I know playing basketball I talked so much trash to the other team that every one of them made it their sole purpose in the game to stop me, hit me, block my shot, that it left my teammates wide open.

Talking isn't going to win you a game, you still have to have the talents, but you can't discredit what it can do.

Being a trash talker is a symptom of something that really does help you win football games which is the confidence that you can beat the player across from you not just on any given play, but on every given play...and the arrogance to completely forget about and totally excuse the few times when you lose that matchup. "That wasn't me."

its all mental...If you back up what you talk then chances are your winning the battle mentally against your opponent. Im not really a fan of a rookie talking thrash "yet". If you can beat your opponent mentally by making them believe ur gonna hurt em or do whatever, then youve already broke em..I understand the whole skill of thrash talking

I think it's moot because the story is all about how Sean Smith isn't saying a word yet but that he was not known as a guy that holds back at Utah. Sam Madison was a trash talker. Joey Porter is a trash talker. Jason Taylor talks. There are some guys that talk constantly on the Patriots.

The Hurricanes used to talk smack back in the day..and they backed it up on the field. The 1986 Mets did the same thing.

If you're going to talk smack and you back it up with your play on the field, then I see no problems with it.

Ronnie Brown is a trash talker as well. Add in Crowder to the list too. I think Yeremiah Bell and Langford are the players that talk the least amount of trash on the team for their respective production. Langford remind me a Bryant Young in that way.
