COMMENTARY: Saban's Free Pass Is Over

Next, the 55 yard field goal attempt. Granted in the end it meant nothing you say because Buffalo didn't end up scoring. Well, it did mean something as it gave Buffalo field position and pinned the Miami offense back when they punted. NFL football is all about field position and when you have an offense that just isn't very good you need to put your offense in the best situations possible. Saban didn't do that.

That field-goal was a totally brain-dead decision and was right out of Dave Wannstedt's gameplan.

The next mistake Nick made was not being aggressive enough early in the 4th quarter. Miami had the ball near mid-field, a third and six, and the Dolphins are punting? The Dolphins defense couldn't get off the field the second half of this game, and you are now punting the ball away down 16-0? It made no sense. This isn't the SEC where that strategy will work. This is the NFL and you must play aggressive, especially late in games when you are losing. And it's a home game no less!

Agreed 100%. When you're down by 16 in the fourth quarter, you can't punt if you're anywhere even approaching mid-field.

So, I think after about a year now we can end with all of the "Nick Saban is a football GOD" talk. We can end with the "don't question Saban" talk. We can throw all of that out the window. Today's game was very Wannstedt-esque. And if you don't believe so then you are just putting your head in the sand.

If I didn't know better I'd swear that Dave Wannstedt's spirit had somehow possessed Saban for today's game. That was a very poorly coached game.

Very good quick read!
I agree, the honeymoon for Nick Saban is officially over!
I'm not happy with many of his offseason moves this year, from the OL pick-ups and changes, to Mularkey as the OC, to...
Time to start showing results!

I think it's kind of silly to suggest that Daunte should have been benched in the fourth quarter in a two possession game!

He played like garbage but the last thing the team needs is a potential QB controversy at the end of week 2.

This isn't the NCAA...the whole Steve Spurrier routine is a disaster waiting to happen. If you bench Daunte in that situation, you better be prepared to live with Harrington the rest of the season because that's the decision you just made!

The Saban honeymoon is over. The reasons you gave for it are totally wrong. I can't believe Finheaven would publish an emotional reaction as an article.

... Then again, looking at this forum over the last few minutes, maybe I can.

You just took the words right out of my mouth.

Disagree with what was said about the field goal. Mare easily has the leg to make that and I think it's good that Saban has faith in him. It isn't like it was 16-0 when we were kicking the field goal, it was 3-0.

Here's another headline for an article:

Culpepper Outplayed by Batch, Losman

yeeesh....

Over reaction.

Make sure you write an article next week about how bad Saban and Culpepper are, bet it won't happen.

Wagers?:sidelol:

That field goal attempt felt like we were setting ourselves up for suicide.

Prior to then, Buffalo's offense had shown no potential to move the football. We could've pinned them back & got great field position. I mean, as boring as it could be, sometimes you have to play the field position game, especially in a defensive battle.

Saban learned a lesson with the red flag last week. Hopefully he learned one here, this week..

So you didn't think there was any chance Mare could have made it? A chance to tie the game, you call that a bad play?

A better headline would be "Tailgun Jerks Knee, Breaks Nose!"

Or more accurately, "Finheaven Jerks Knee, Suffers Concussion!"

No jerky knees here, bud. I've hated Daunte Culpepper with a passion before he was ever traded here. The 2nd-most overrated QB in the NFL.

But you stay with your boy. If Saban agrees with you, you and the whole team can keep circling the drain for another 3 or 4 weeks...
