COMMENTARY: The Dolphins Offseason Primer: Part 2

That was a good read. I felt that he was spot-on on most of his assessments. Having Ricky back would completely change the dynamic of that backfield. I would like to see Sammy Morris back as well, he is a very underated player who can make big contributions on special teams and handle a few carries a game. I would have no problem letting Minor go...kind of a wasted draft pick there. I would hope that we don't spend a second rounder on Leonard either. We have much more important needs than adding a versatile full back/h-back. I would have liked to have kept Fred Beasley last year, but according to Saban, Darian Barnes was better...:rolleyes2

Good read

Thanks! Hey, Clumpmeister, I'm going to need you to check my math on the next one of these articles (WR/TE). I think I figured the cap savings and dead cap for Chambers and McMichael correctly, but you're the expert.

Good read.

Why is this thread rated so low?

Haters. No love.

Thanks!

I would be furious if we spent a 2nd rounder on Leonard unless he bench presses a Volkswagen between now and the combine. A third may make sense if Williams isn't back with the team, however. If Williams is back, I'd be stunned if we pick Leonard. With Brown and Williams, there wouldn't be many carries/receptions to distribute to other backs, and thus would be a waste of Leonard's talents. However, if the team could trade Williams for a 3rd or 4th (I can't imagine getting more than that; if Mueller can, he's a genius), Leonard would become a very realistic option in round 3, I believe.

As for Beasley, I was surprised as well, but Barnes flat out won the job. The fact that he's cheap and at least adequate probably means he'll be in the mix next year. I'm interested to see if Eckel can be the sort of H-back/FB type Cameron might be envisioning.

Good read. I also enjoyed the first part. I am in total agreement over the quarterback situation. I am not a fan of drafting a Qb this year. I agree with the countless fans who argue that in order for Miami to remove itself from the throes of mediocrity they must get a quality quarterback, however, the approach to doing so differs. It is by far the hardest position to fill on the roster but I am not convinced that the draft is always the best avenue to pursue. It may sound obvious but I would only draft a Qb if the coaches are convinced and committed to a player, someone that they strongly feel will be the answer. Even then there is so much uncertainty -I'm sure the Chargers were pretty sure of Ryan Leaf, or the Texans with Carr.
The reality is that, as noted in the first colomn, we actually have some reasonable options on our roster. It may be unwise to spend a pick on a position that at least has some potential when there are other areas where immediate help is needed. In additon, certain psotions are not as much as a gamble, where the draft is concerned, as QB.
This isn't to suggest that DC or CL will be the answer, however, I think both players need to be given a serious look before we start drafting a Qb high in the draft.

That was definitely a good read. Morris has also played FB so that could earn him more playing time in certain packages with Ronnie/Ricky. Barnes has improved his blocking but was hardly used this past season. Eckel could be that "X" factor out of the FB position but how good of a lead blocker is he.
Alabama's McClain or Tennessee's Corey Anderson (6'2" 258) could be worth a chance on the second day or as UDFAs.

I don't see much of a trade market for Ricky. I've heard if he's busted one more time for substances he is gone forever from the NFL.

Good read....I would love to see us get a draft pick for Ricky.

I thought that was a great read but I was wondering I am pretty sure that Mughelli form the ravens is a free agent. I think he is the answer we need at fullback he is a great blocker and I remember seeing him have a good year catching the ball out of the backfield which cameron did alot with neal. If someoe could let me know for sure if he is a free agent andabout how you guys feel if we added this guy.

You're right, Ovie Mughelli is a free agent, and he's a fine pass catcher for a fullback, as well as a top-notch blocker. Good call.

Well, I went through it pretty quickly, but I don't read the drug policy as mandating a lifetime ban if Williams fails another test. I read it as mandating another one year ban, with reinstatement subject to the commissioner's discretion. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

But yeah, any way you slice it, that tends to put a damper on his trade value. Williams' ability is on par with any first round running back, but obviously, circumstances will make teams discount that a lot. Like I suggested in my article, I think the Phins would strongly consider taking a 3rd or 4th and being done with it. And as discount prices go, that's reasonable. A team that's a piece away from making a strong playoff run might roll the dice on him. Denver, for instance, makes a TON of sense as a potential landing spot if the Phins trade Williams.

See, I also thought Morris should be used as a FB more, given his past experience at that position, but I don't think he played a down of fullback last year. If he did, it was by accident.

I have no idea how good a lead blocker Eckel may be. I've never seen the guy play; I'm just going on what little I saw/read about from his time at the Naval Academy.

Why would the Phins trade Ricky though? The reality is that he isn't going to fetch much on the market and he's under contract for a very reasonable amount. As Saban said, the guy is a presence on the field. I'm all for keeping Ricky. I don' think he will be a distraction.
