Commentary: The Dolphins Offseason Primer, Part 3

Good read Phil.I think you have analyzed our receiver situation very well.

We may have to move CC back to the slot which would leave Welker as the odd man out especially cosidering his free agent status.

We do need to add a deep WR with speed. We had Kelly Campbell in camp last year but he is injury prone.

Wè could invest a high draft pick on a speedy WR but I would prefer to address our problems in the OL first. What good is it to have a speedy WR if the QB cant get the ball to him.

There are a lot of needs on this team and we cant address them all in one go so IMO it will be a building process.

Great opinions. I hate to speculate because I think we may have just needed the man in charge out. The first year after a tough start our o-line ended the year by providing R@R 4.5+ on the year and second in the league in fewest sacks allowed. Our secondary really played great helping us finish by winning 7 in a row. Then Dick dismantled both. I look at our team and want to beleive evrything needed is here they just need a better leader who can provide continuity and leadership which was seriously lacky.

Thanks!

As I said, I'm sure it's a pipe dream, but I really think a Welker-Wilford swap of RFAs works for both teams. But anyway, if CC moves back to the slot, where he belongs, Welker is definitely the odd man out.

As for addressing the OL problems first, I agree. If it's a choice between Levi Brown and Ted Ginn, I'd have to take Brown. And I like Ginn a lot, but that LT position is a real need.

Good read. Definitely think we should go WR in draft rather than FA unless Kevin Curtis comes in cheap. How do you think the coaching change (both HC and WR's coach) will affect this crew we've got?

Well I was really hoping that Dallas's center Gurode would become a free Agent, but they resigned him, now that leaves the center for the Giants, Shaun O'Hara who can now ask crazy money since Gurode is gone..I was hoping to rebuild the interior line first, by getting one of those centers, moving rex to LG, Leaving Shelton at RG, with Carey at RT..and then addressing the LT position throught free agency or the draft, with Penn State's Brown, provided, Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin isn't miraculously left to us or we don't trade up to get him. I think addressing this situation, will cure a lot of ills in other spots, i.e., WR's, and QB, I still think we should get another Punt and KO returner, while I love welker's heart, he's just not dangerous enough. I actually like him more as a possession receiver, because of his hands. If Shelton's going to play G, we need him to redo his contract, because he was signed with LT money. We can't pay McIntosh that kind of money too, since he played decently enough to get a nice contract this off season, but I think we can get someone better, and we have to pay them too, if we don't draft a LT. If we clean up the OL play, we clean up a lot of the skill positions play as well.

Wow. Very well written. And I agree with just about everything.

Absolutely. We need upgrades at Center and Left Tackle. Move Hadnot back to Guard, and we're looking at a much improved o-line. I'd love to keep Shelton at RG if possible, but money and ego might get in the way. And I'd keep DMac as a backup.

Re-sign Welker! He's invaluable as a possession WR, and quite possibly the heart of our offense. But you're right. He is a very capable return guy, but not "dangerous." That's the perfect way to describe him. I would have him continue to return punts, but let's get a "dangerous" guy back there returning kickoffs. Or vice versa.

The suggestion is to let the higher performing, less expensive wideout go... and keep the poorer performing, more expensive wideout?

That's just nuts.

The OL Primer is coming soon. Promise. I'll discuss all this then.

It would be nuts...if it were true. The 2005 Chris Chambers showed what he could do with: a. some semi-consistent QB play, b. an opportunity to play in the slot, and c. play-calling that wasn't totally brain dead. If used properly, there's no reason to believe that Chambers is anything but a legitimate #1 receiver. Welker's absolute best performance is what we saw in 2006. That's great, but he doesn't amount to a legit #1 or #2 receiver on this planet or any other. Welker is a good 3rd receiver whose versatility gives him value. That's a nice thing to have, but don't confuse it with being more valuable than a #1 receiver.

Thanks. And honestly, I don't know that it's going to affect things. Market forces would seem to dictate that we're not going to see a ton of change at WR. There's simply not enough out there to rebuild in free agency, and it's hard to imagine the team would scrap everything and draft a bunch of new receivers.

Out of Chambers, Booker and Welker, I think you'll see two of them back in 2007. Which two are anyone's guess. As I said in the article, I think it's most likely that Chambers and Booker return, if only because I think either Chambers or Welker probably has to go. But I wouldn't be stunned if Chambers were traded for, say, a 2nd round pick, nor would I be shocked if Booker were cut outright or traded for a second-day pick.

The 2005 Chris Chambers showed what he could do

...when no one in the league was thrown more balls than he was.

Hell, even Karim Abdul-Jabbar can run for 1000 yards if you're determined to give him the ball enough times and don't care whether or not you win the games along the way.

Yes, all the Chambers' apologists are correct on that much: if no one in the NFL gets more balls thrown at him (as was the case with Chambers in 2005), then Chambers will post decent stats... and the offense will again be the weak link that keeps the Dolphins out of the serious competition.

People need to ask themselves if that's what they really want. I'd rather have to leave my Chambers jersey in the closet and win than get to wear it and lose.
