COMMENTARY: The Dolphins Offseason Primer, Part 5

Really good article. I'm pretty upbeat about our situation on the D-line. Signing Vonnie back was huge, and we also have a lot of young question marks in the middle. I do think there's a good chance we lose K. Carter, but am excited to see Matt Roth have a larger role. I would also love to see us re-sign Bowens, but I don't know if it's going to happen.

That's some mighty good reading. I'm eager to see what Matt Roth can do fulltime.

The questions I have about the D-Line is if Fred Evans, Rod Wright or anyone else has the size and strength needed to play NT on a consistant basis.

Thanks for the props, all! :)

Evans might project as a nose tackle, but Manny Wright seems to be more of an under tackle. Rod Wright strikes me as a bit taller than your usual NT, and I think he's got quickness that might also make him a better fit for the UT spot. Since I don't think Evans has the sort of ceiling that those guys have, a pure nose tackle will likely be a priority in the draft. Again, I think if the Phins had the chance to take Alan Branch at 9, they'd run with it unless Brady Quinn was on the board (and what a wonderful choice that would be!).

One correction I need to make here:

Justin Harrell is a big run-stuffing defensive tackle from Tennessee who might get a look in the first or second round if the team passes on Branch

I said "first or second round". I meant "second or third round". It would take a Mike Mamula-like rise for Harrell to merit consideration at #9.

Good read. DL, other than NT, wasn't really what I considered a must-fix and it's good to see it doing so well. I think Paul Soliai would be the best bet to possibly replace Traylor at NT unless we don't get Quinn and get Branch. He did a pretty fair job against us (UCLA) in shutting down our run-heavy offense and Markey. Though I guess since this article was posted Hollis Thomas has already been re-signed.

That's correct. I wrote this on Sunday, and I believe Thomas was resigned on Tuesday.

And yeah, I love Soliai as a second day guy, but he's got the sort of size and strength measurables that might move him up the board pretty far.

Good commentary but you should polish your knowledge of cap savings when players are released.

Carter’s cap hit for 2007 is $6.475 million. That’s way too much for a good, but not great, defensive lineman, particularly one who could be replaced without a great amount of anguish. Cutting Carter would save $4.563 million against the cap, with a $1.913 dead cap carryover into 2008.

If you look at my salary cap chart or the finheaven chart you will see the current signing bonus pro-ration is $1.275 million. With three years left on the contract total dead money is $3.825. It doesn't always work out this way but in this case it does.

If a player is traded or released on or before 6/01 all unamortized bonus is charged to the current year. After 6/01 all unamortized bonus is charged to the next year.

Cap savings for Carter on or before 6/01 is $2.65 million. Net Cap Savings is $2.365 because the 52 highest salary right now is $285k.

Net Cap Savings for Carter if traded or released after 6/01 is $4.915 million with $2.550 of dead money charged in 2008. This option for Carter doesn't make as much sense because his Salary Cap Charge is too high as you point out and the immediate savings is large enough to increase cap space now when it is needed for Free Agency.

If you were thinking about the new rule of releasing two players early and being charged with the rules for after 6/01 the drawback is the player's cap charge is not changed until after 6/01, which negates any savings until then.

Good read..... its nice to read someone who actually knows a thing or two every once in awhile. Good articles seem to be hard to come by when it comes to Dolfans.....

I think the one thing the article didn't consider about Amobi is that he could quite possibly be as talented as Jason Taylor. Can you imagine him sliding back to ILB or DE in the 3-4 if you want to put a run-stuffer in the middle of the line? I'm thoroughly convinced he's the most physically talented defensive lineman in this draft and he hasn't even come close to realizing his full potential. Miami's system is perfect for him.
