Commentary: The Scorpion

This article succeeded at doing one thing.

Jumping to a conclusion before all the facts were straight. A 9.1 million dollar "bong hit". So you assume he smoked pot and failed because of that?

As it stands right now, it has yet to be released what he exactly took to fail that test.

So good job...if your job is to criticize others before knowing all the facts.

I'm not suprised by any of it. Not at all.
You want to know a man's future behavior, look at his past behaviors.

Good read, and I don't usually agree with the commentarys

I still say people can change. The just have to want to change.

pretty bold statement..what makes you so confident?

I was kidding more than anything. ;) But there's no evidence of him ever using anything other than weed.

I get the feeling like alot of people will end up looking like fools.

....and perhaps the bottm of the river is where he'll be happy.

More power to him finding his own happiness.

wow, if Ricky just missed a test, rather than outright failed a test, then this columinist will have prematurely jumped to conclusions.

Let's wait till all the facts are in before we start comparing Ricky to a scorpion, a hired gun, or any other cute analogy we can think up.

Well, the hired gun thing is not new. I've pretty much said that since the day he came back.

If Williams missed a test, the effect is the same: one year suspension. If he toked up, snorted coke, dropped acid, or missed a test, there's no difference as to the net result. So to the extent that I jumped to a conclusion in assuming he smoked pot, guilty as charged. However, his past history makes me fairly confident on that score.

Nevertheless, if you'd prefer to think of it as a $9.1 million missed drug test, go for it.

If we find out that this was all a big misunderstanding, and there's no suspension forthcoming, I'll happily write a retraction/apology/mea culpa. But when the Miami Herald and now ESPN confirm it, I've got a pretty good feeling...actually, a pretty BAD feeling, that this is accurate.

Your response succeeded in one thing: needlessly splitting hairs. Who gives a damn WHY he failed the test? The net result is the same. Given past history, it seems likely that he smoked pot and failed. If he snorted coke and failed instead, it doesn't really matter.

Good article, but I don't get why you say he "crippled" us with this. You seem to contradict yourself at the end when you play down the impact on the team.

Well, he crippled the team by breaking the trust they placed in him and in robbing the team of a potential asset for 2006. The impact on the field in 2006 shouldn't be huge, thanks to Ronnie Brown, but right now, I'd say "crippled" is an apt verb.

The new report is that Williams missed a test because he was in India. If that's true, then I soften my critical stance only slightly. Feel free to substitute the words "missed test" for "bong hit". The net result is the same, though there may be at least a possibility of a successful appeal.

ESPN didn't confirm anything, just noted what was written in the Miami Herald.

Because if he failed the test simply because he missed an unscheduled one, then the analogy doesn't stand.

Well, he didn't "cripple the team" as stated. Nick made sure he was never in a position to do that. Just wish he could've lasted another couple months, because I think the plan was to trade him before he had a chance to blow up. Oh, well, we got a year out of him that nobody expected.

I agree with InFins- he is simply not motivated by money or a passion for football, and perhaps he'll find peace outside the game. I think he was just trying to get out from under the debt so he could live unencumbered, but it's clearly not in him to tow the line for the years it would've taken.

How does it not stand? The net result remains the same; his stupid actions led to the same result!
