Makes sense that Bill Belichick would be the first in line to talk to Zach Thomas, a Miami Dolphins icon until Thursday, when he was dropped by the team's new regime onto the NFL trash heap.

Out of respect for the amazing leadership that Zach showed and the jarring tackles he doled out and the numbing injuries he played through over 12 Miami seasons, we'll call it the top of the heap.

All the same, what Dolphins godfather Bill Parcells and his lieutenants have done here is confirm that every player, no matter how popular, no matter how decorated, is to be measured on a cost-analysis basis alone.

Zach's cost to the Dolphins for next season would have been close to $6 million. Analysis: He's 34 and prone to concussions. Cut him.

The thing is, Zach can still play, even if it's not 16 games in a row and all-out on every defensive down, like it used to be.

What is so perfect about Zach to the Pats ?? He is not even close to the type of LB that BB likes...He's at least 30 lbs lighter than any LB they have now, except Izzo, their STs guy. You think ZT will be Izzo's replacement since he's a STer...doubtful...He really doesn't fit in and hasn't really played their scheme of D save for a year with Saban...I don't see this great fit taht everyone is talking about...

I wouldn't mind seeing him in New England. To me it would be MUCH worse for him to go to the Jets or Bills, two teams i hate far more than the Patriots. At least if Zach went to New England he'd probably have a lot of success, a good seasons with a lot of good players beside him, and of course be on a winning team. If Zach went to the Jets or Bills not only would he be playing for probably mediocre-bad teams next year, but i cant imagine he'd have as good as season as he could in New England, and it would just be horrible seeing him in those uniforms.
