Commentary: Two Things Worth Defending

I disagree. I think Freotte is actually playing worse than the offensive line is pass protecting

OK, Phil, here's the big point with Notre Dame. All the other big teams have to win their conference to be guaranteed a BCS game. If Notre Dame ends the season at a certain point in the polls, they're automatically in...the only independent that has that little caveat. Now, I forget if it's 8th, 10th, or 12th (I'm leaning towards 12th), but by starting them at 16th, this is the BCS' way of handicapping the Irish, so to speak. They have the huge advantage of not having to compete within a conference so the computers are knocking them back a little bit to compensate.

Just a note, this is the first time Notre Dame has been relevant in the BCS.

I don't know about that. I'd say they're both about equal. But like he said, we don't have any one better. And that's the reality. So people can do all the complaining they want but until we find someone better, I'm going to support Gus.

Gus Frerotte single handedly has "left" 4 touchdowns out there due to overthrows.....

I disagree....but good article anyway.

Oh, also, re: the Canes, if you're gonna lose, the BCS rewards teams who lose early and punishes those that lose late. So losing to a team that was as high as 4th and won't crash like Meeeeechigan in September isn't horrible.

"I’d prefer to pick up an established (though preferably young) NFL QB who can come right in and help the team..."

Phil, I just wanted to ask you if you could name a couple of QB's that you would like Miami to look at that are established and preferably young. Good commentary overall.

Ok The BCS sucks and Dilfer isnt 1 of the 20 best qbs (2 mannings, Palmer, McNabb, McNair, Volek, Brees, Vick, Schaub, Brady, Hasselbeck, Green, Bulger, Duante (bad year or not), Collins, Leftwich, Ben, Favre, Griese (pre injury), Delhomme, McCown etc) End of discussion. At least you got the Frerotte bashing part right. We dont have a better alternative on this team right now.

Phil:
If I have a complaint about Gus it goes soemthign like this. If you look at his numbers (Passer rating, Fumbles, INTS, TDs, Yrds, etc.) They really look no better than Feeley's or Fiedler's. If you look at the fact that he has a severe accuracy problem, it makes you wonder how does this come to be? I mean there were QB's in the draft. We knew since February Ricky was coming back. We didn't try and get any of the established FA QBs (Bledsoe,Brunell,Dilfer, etc.) So what did we gain? It seems to me at least that Gus was Linehan's boy since day one and that Saban let him cal the shot. The talent just isn't there. In fact, in the last four years we have failed to improve the QB position and the OLine. Yet every year we all say that this is the biggest area of need. Yet it does not get solved.

The sentiment for Sage is not because Sage has proven anything. It is that Gus has proven he is not capable. So why not try a change? I don't know, just seems that until we get someone who is at least a minimal threat at QB, we are going to sputter.

I also do not agree with all of the WR bashing. If the QB gets those balls catchable then they are making more plays. There is always a few drops. They just seemed magnified because Gus rarely gets it there to give them a chance to begin with.

The Gus bashing is deserved. He has to play better for this team to win. He is getting decent protection and he often has open guys. He has got to make these plays and he has go to hold on to the ball better.

I think the valuable argument to be made is that this is only year one of the Saban era. There is a plan, it is under way, but it will take time. In the end we will have a solid QB. Trust in Saban.

Gus wasnt brought here to be a long term answer. He was the only option available.

Feeley stunk too much and most of the fan base hated him
Fiedler...see above
Warner holds the ball forever and would be dead behind this OL
Collins, Bledsoe...see above
Garcia is trash. Worse then any of the above except AJ
Dilfer might have been an option but who knows.

You know the drill. So the only thing we could have done was trade picks (for Brunell? LOL. hes an old manwho almost everyone felt was past his prime) and we already saw how well that worked out under the other regime.

good article. your BCS bit reminded me of how we used to have it: remember when BYU beat a 6-5 michigan team to claim the national title one year? i'll take anything over the way it used to be, even something as flawed as the BCS.

as for gus, i'm all for being patient with the guy, but there are a lot of big plays left on the field (as fin-atic said), and i'm not pinning them all on the receivers. that said, i'm really happy the team isn't unloading high draft picks to try to solve the problem NOW. long term thinking is in order here. i would be shocked if next year's QB competition goes like this year's...

well done.

Gus has his opportunties. It is not like it is last year or the texan line. Heck people will always thinks this line sucks if they aren't just totally dominating because they remember last year. Not saying they are great, but the protection has been there. Gus has just been off the mark.

Whether the fan base hated feeley or not, the FACT is that his stats weren't all that far removed from gus frerotte's whose two years in the system apparently were just enough to fool everyone into believing that he might be more than he ever was but in reality he is nothing more than a never was.

Nick supposedly gave gus the job because he "gave us the best chance to win"....Now he's turned around and gotten rid of a player and replaced him with someone who does NOT improve our QB situation this year....Can you spot the mixed message here??

This is looking like Wannstedt and Fiedler all over again, I just hope that Saban is smart enough to only throw away one season to his ego and not keep trying to "prove" himself year after year... for the record, I still think Saban is smart enough to avoid that trap.

I think the last line in your post made the most sense, anyone who thinks Nick Saban has a Wannstedt/Fiedler type obsession with Gus Frerotte is reaching, the main problem with AJ was his penchant for giving games away last year with interceptions. Gus was doing okay managing the games early on but in the last two weeks he has slipped and I think Saban has noticed.

Randy Mueller is looking under every rock for the QB of the future here, I seriously doubt Frerotte will be starting here next year.
