Comparing Ronnie Brown's # of touches to that of other great backs

Just because he doesn't get touches doesn't mean his body won't deteriorate with age. Obviously it will deteriorate less than if he had more touches but it is very likely than his attributes will be far lesser at 30 than at 27. It's just the way the human body works.

Here's the link: http://www.thephinsider.com/2009/6/2/895949/ronnie-brown-how-much-does-he-have

The article tries to prove that while Ronnie is 27 years old, he has nowhere near the number of touches that other backs had. So it's not fair to say Brown will start slowing down at age 30 because he has far fewer carries than typical starting running backs at his age.

Interesting food for thought, I guess.

Injuries usually have more affect than carries in most cases. Age is age. remember how people tried to act like Beck could play longer than an average qb because he did not have the miles on him but there is no evidence that supports this theory either way. So are we to assume that Ronnie Brown will slow down one year later than Alexander because he is one season behind in carries. Resigning any 28 year old back or 27 to 5 year contract at this point makes no sense at all. Lets see what he does this year and make a decision. He has already been a top paid NFL back since a rookie so he has no reason to complain or feel slighted. Lets say we resign him to a 5 year contract now and he tears an ACL this year, well our cap will be affected for years because we rushed for no reason.

Let me tell you....Age is age, regardless. By that reasoning I'd be in the prime of my career as an NFL running back, since I haven't had many touches.

Seriously, though...Sure, touches will help determine wear, but, OTOH, the conventional Finheaven wisdom is that Ronnie's not putting up the numbers, simply because he hasn't had a "fair chance" to do so. Now, that means having the weight of the team and, carries upon you.

As DLokz said; Injuries have lots to do with wear and tear. Ronnie's had a number of them, like it or not, including a bad one to the knee.

James had the same knee injury in the same career season as Ronnie (3rd) and I think his career turned out fine.

I have looked at this in a different way in other treads from the past.

If you want to see a better reason for the sharp decline in a backs performance look at the number of backs with 350 carries in a season. Then look at what they did after that season (four years after)! You will see an obvious trend in loss of production or injury after a 350 touch season. It is just too much punishment.

Physicists, mathematicians, chess & football players need to make their mark before they're 30 or have lived in vain. No exceptions.
:boohoo:

I think that so far in his career, Ronnie Brown has not shown good durability, which is the key for RB's. I'm not saying that Brown will not become a top 5 back in the NFL, but when you have had injury problems early in your career, you are fighting an up-hill battle to remain fit and sustain a consistant level of fitness. You see it in all sports, players who suffer from injurys early usually have shorter careers.

BUt, Ronnie Brown has shown good promise coming back from his ACL injury. But this season will be the key one as to whether he gets paid. Ronnie will get more touches this season and carry the load alot more, which will put more strain on his knee and we will then see has Brown over-come his injury woes. Its why the FO will until he proves he can do the business on a full time basis before paying him.
