Compensatory Draft Selections Question

Could someone be so kind as to explain the process of compensatory picks.

I know that it has to do with how many free agents you sign versus lose
and the picks range from the end of rounds 3-7.

How does this relate to what we have done so far and do these draft picks take place this year or next.

Any help in this matter will be appreciated.

What happens this year will affect next years draft. So any picks we might get would be based on FA signings/loses from last season.
