Do you think we will get one?

Compensatory picks
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

I would think we would with Goodman and Hill signing somewhere else...

But we signed JT, G.Wilson to a big contract as well as J.Groves so they counter the losses we had. We're not getting any comp picks this year, besides it seems like NE gets them all every year, amazing how they sign plenty of FA's every year.

true on that pats how the hell do they manage to get them, oh wait the nfl loves the pats i forget

Wilson was cut by Oakland so he doesn't count towards that. I think JT was officially as well. If we keep cutting our impending FAs before they become FAs we won't get any next season, though.

He was cut by Oakland, but I think that affects Oakland . . . not us. We still signed him as a FA.

Pretty much, it's:

Goodman & Hill vs. Grove, Wilson, JT and Wake

We won't be getting any picks this year.

Didn't we trade for Grove? If not wouldn't Satele take Grove out.

Wake wasn't a FA from an NFL team. I thought they had to be.

That's not correct. The way the system works, a player that is cut does not get pooled in with the others. Jason Taylor, Cameron Wake and Gibril Wilson do not count in the formulas. Taylor and Wilson were cut. Wake was originally cut by the Giants and then he cleared waivers, and that is why he had free agent status.

You have to keep in mind that the formula is based on a closed pool of free agents, whose contracts expired, and then they proceeded to sign with a new team. That's it. The system was designed as a way to compensate for free agent losses. Cutting a guy is not a free agent loss, and so another team grabbing that player is not a gain that they made as the result of the free agency system. Even before free agency was in existence, players could be cut and then other teams could get hold of them. The free agency system was put in place and it guided to where after four vested years in the NFL, a player with an expired contract is no longer any team's property, where before even if a player's contract had expired his rights still belonged to the team...and this compensatory process was set up as a way to complement the free agency process.

As far as I can tell, Dolphin contracts that were allowed to expire, with player then switching to a different team, include...

FS Renaldo Hill
CB Andre Goodman
OC Al Johnson

The free agents whose contracts expired, that joined the Dolphins include...

OC Jake Grove
OC Joe Berger
CB Eric Green

Now, both Al Johnson and Eric Green never made it onto a 53-man roster, so they will be tossed out of the system. What you have left is Andre Goodman and Renaldo Hill versus Jake Grove and Joe Berger. I think that Jake Grove and Andre Goodman will cancel one another out.

But Renaldo Hill versus Joe Berger is tougher because Berger has had to start 3 games now in place of an injured Jake Grove. But the fact of the matter is Renaldo Hill signed a 4 year, $10 million contract with $3 million guaranteed, and has started all 13 games for the Broncos. Berger signed a 3 year deal, I don't know if the terms ever came to be known but they were probably small, and he's been forced to start 3 games due to injury.

If I had to guess, I would say the Hill for Berger thing would be worth about a 6th round pick.

CK, on an unrelated note, how come you guys haven't been updating Universal Draft regularly? When can we expect some rankings and such? Thanks

Con is working on a rollout pretty soon. It's sort of like a seasonal place, we're ready to have a Grand Opening for this draft season pretty soon but we don't have it yet.

Our goal is to eventually be year-round but we still have a lot to work on as far as getting to that point, all three of us having "normal" jobs, families, etc.

I will say that I do not think you'll be disappointed. This year I've been working on getting a whole lot of video to help us out in explaining our draft evaluations.

We're aiming high. If we get it the way we want it, we'll have the best draft site out there. It would be a draft site that I would want to frequent, and I have high standards.

Nothing beats NFL Draft Scout for their ability to compile massive loads of accurate information and news...but if we can illustrate our draft evaluations with video, commentary, showing you exactly what we're talking about, much as Draft Guys TV did last year, that would be our goal.

Incidentally, Draft Guys TV was one of my absolute favorite places to go for draft stuff. But, they're defunct. I've spoken with Sigmund Bloom, he's got a kid on the way, and the guy who produced for them got a job out in NYC, so they won't be around this year. I plan on meeting Cecil Lammey at the Shrine practices, though.
