Can someone help me out in understanding compensatory picks and where we stand this year with them? I know that losing miller and vernon can definitely net us some picks. Can we see more picks if we lose Moore and Matthews as well?

Compensatory picks based on this year's free agency will be assigned prior to the 2017 draft, and Miami could be looking at some nice compensation. Based on last years loses and the signing of Suh I doubt Miami gets anything this year.

Pick from this free agent season will be awarded for the 2017 draft. Until we are done signing free agents and all of our free agents sign elsewhere nobody can even guess what would or would not be awarded or not. Then they have a formula that basically compares what we signed to what we lost. If we signed nobody and lost all of Vernon, Miller, Shelby, Matthews, and Moore we would probably get a 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th, 5th or 6th, and a 7th respectively depending on how large a deals they sign. But the new safety we signed will nullify Shelby in all likelihood. If we sign a $6 mill/ year corner that would nullify the comp pick we would have gotten for Miller. So you want to shop wisely. It sounds like Mario Williams will NOT count towards this formula because he was cut, and did not enter the off-season as an UDFA. That will probably help ensure we get that 3rd for losing Vernon.

Hayden brought up great points about signing guys that were cut not effecting compensation (Williams). Ozzie Newsome does a lot of this. Judging on how this FA is starting it looks like they are going to get good compensatory picks in 2017 by not making the splash signings and losing guys that were signed to big time contracts. As previously stated, don't expect any picks this year with the way FA was handled last year.

Point is we should get a some good comp picks next year.

And while you can't trade comp picks, Miami could say "we know we're getting some picks next year, so lets not be afraid to trade one of our regular 2017 drat picks for a 2016 pick if there's a player on the board we really like."

You will be allowed to trade compensatory picks starting in 2017. Also, Mario Williams won't count against us and Brent Grimes won't count for us for the same reason.

Cool - more picks for Tannenbaum to give away

People must think I am a Tannenbaum rep after these last two days . . . . But the thinking when it comes to the compensatory picks and how free agency is going so far really is reflecting a Chris Grier lead offseason.

Just keep that in mind when trying to blame or even praise Mike Tannenbaum.

He is thought of much more highly than Hickey ever was and much more respected. He is not a stooge either.

Tannenbaum's MO is the big splash. We aren't doing that this off season obviously. IMHO you're correct. Just hope Grier hits it in the next two drafts.
