At the game vs. Indianapolis and San Diego, our cornerbacks seemed lost, like if they were playing for the Cardinals, but vs Buffalo, they seemed all-pro.

Obviously the passing game of Indianapolis and San Diego is way far better than Buffalo's, but how do you see our young cornerbacks for this season and for long term solution, do you think they will be able to handle Terrel Owens, Randy Moss and Braylon Edwards 2 times a year each?

Please post all of your thoughts!

GO PHINS!!!

Eventually yes, I mean like u said they played 3 of 3 top 10 passing offenses and QB's in the league consecutively, they were due to destory a bottom 10 QB. I just hope it gives them confidence.

They still made huge rookie mistakes against Buffalo. Remember all those huge yardage completions? Good thing they weren't so important.

Our secondary woes are more of a safety/linebacker issue than a cornerback one. And if any corner is giving up crucial 3rd down conversions it's usually Will Allen and Nathan Jones.

I'm not concerned. Isn't Malcom Jenkins like 4th string for the Saints?

Well, Chargers and the Colts are two of the best passing teams in the NFL....so yeah, our Rookie corners struggled(though to be fair, Reggie Wayne only caught 3 balls for 37 yards, not to shabby on our end).

This season, like any rookie, they will still have rookie moments; im guessing the Saints game is going to be very ugly. Yet i have alot of faith in them for years forward.
They both seem to have great athletic ability, and while that scared me a bit in Vontae, they both seem willing to do the classwork to get better and be prepared every week. Vontae's pick last week was classic film study. He just read the QB, recalled his tendencies, and acted.

I think we are lucky to have the pair, and if they can keep there ego's in check and continue the film work, we could be looking at a corner combo of the likes of Al Harris/Charles Woodson or Champ Bailey/Anyone else.

With Langford/Merling up front and Davis/Smith in back we have great young center pieces to build around(along with others if they continue to grow: see Wake, Cameron). Get us a nose tackle in next years draft and ill die happy.

I'll just hope that you are right!

Against the Chargers our pass defense had much tighter spacing compared to the earlier games. Keep in mind Miami only gave up 16 points against the Chargers, having to go to the west coast on a short week.

Where Miami lost that game was on the first drive of the game. On a 95 yard drive Ronnie and Pennington miffed on the exchange on San Diego's one yard line. Had they converted that TD there that is a whole different game.

But again, our coverage was tighter in the San Diego game, as you can see in the pictures below.. Rivers just threw some perfect passes that any corner would have a very hard time getting their hands on.. I saw Revis against Tennessee get beat multiple times on very good coverage but those passes were perfect.

Rivers and Manning are two of the best QB's in the NFL and it was a very tough spot to start the year playing elite QB's. There are 3 new people in our secondary this year along with 2 rookies.. It takes a few games for them to play as one unit and to gel.. Over the last couple of weeks I have seen them starting to gel playing better compared to the first 2 games.

I think Sean Smith has some things to work on. He has been with his top-notch receiver week in and week out, but a few times he did not turn around in time and the receiver just stopped and caught it. I have also seen him make a play by turning around at the same time. But his coverage has been very good considering he is a rookie going up vs. the top receiver alot.

Reggie Wayne did not have a huge night vs. us.

Vontae has less reps in the defense put in but the Int for TD certainly means he is not lost. I am actually waiting to see Vontae vs. the Jets and Pats cus they do alot of that quick bubble screen crap all day and vontae is the best cb tackler we have IMO.

I am very pleased with our rookie CB's. They will get the little things as time goes on. Next year we should see much improved DB's cus these guys will not be going anywhere.

For a corner, underthrown balls are one of the hardest to defend. I noticed some plays where Smith would be a step ahead of the receiver and just missed by a split second getting a hand on the ball

hardest thing to learn for a rookie CB is to look at the QB while still running with the WR. I see them in position but aren't looking for the ball and the receiver ends making the play simply because he's looking the ball in. this will come in time when the game starts to slow down a little.

did vontae davis even play much agaisnt those two teams... SD and INDy... in pass situations... I don't remember him being out there much against them. and therefore we need to be more worried about will allen.

whom I have never understood his being over rated anyhow.

I love what smith is showing thus far, and vontae will get better with more reps, and already is excelling at rush defense.

Vontae Davis has been playing pretty solid for a 1st round pick, he hasn't gotten beaten much this season, and add to that he has a pick 6.

Sean Smith has been like a top 10-15 Corner so far this year counting all corners, he never got beaten deep, Malcolm Floyd just made a terrific catch on one of the times he allowed a deep play, probably every corner would allow a catch on that one, the catch to T.O. he was with him step for step and T.O. had to come back to catch it, and Sean couldn't stop and pull back, if it was throw in the correct place, he would have either intercepted or knocked it incomplete.

Todd Bowles is the man. He did such a good job coaching up the secondary last year...But if you really want some perspective, remember Jimmy Johnson's first year when we played the Dallas Cowboys. He had both corners play 10 yds off the ball all game long. He had them playing so scared they were'nt even allowed to compete.

No dude, it's definately just you. Lil' Mel and Evil Ronnie are straight ballers and as good as they come in the NFL...

i wouldn't say they were lost... the thing about the big plays against San Diego when it was on our Sean Smith was he had GREAT coverage... he blanketed the WR but it was just a perfectly thrown ball and Smith went for the INT instead of just knocking it away, he even said it himself he messed up...

thats been the saving grace with Smith, he's given up a few plays but even when he has he's had great coverage and its needed a perfect throw to beat him... he'll learn some things and with the experience he'll turn that great coverage into an incomplete pass as he develops... hes gonna be good...

vontae has been beaten a few times where hes actually been a few steps behind but he has all the athletic ability in the world and he'll fix those problems... hes also a gambler as we saw in the Bills game, so sometimes it'll pay off, sometimes it'll hurt him but you gotta limit the times it'll hurt and just keep making plays... im really excited for both of these guys they are both gonna be good... especially Smith hes gonna be an all pro sooner rather than later
