The only thing I dont understand about Saban is drafting players who don't fit our system. Manny Wright isn't a true nose tackle and Matt Roth is not a true 3-4 end. If you go by the theory that most coaches will say "We try to put players in the best position to make plays." How do you do that if dont fit?

Saban doesn't run strictly a 3-4 defense. He wants to have flexibility and be able to change up depending on who we are playing.

I agree with you but last year we had so many holes to fill I thought that was a luxury we could n't afford at that time.

Wouldn't it be better if we give them a chance to play before anyone decides they don't fit. It occurs to me Saban picked the person not the position. I don't think Manatee was drafted to be a "nose tackle" per say, I think it was for his pass rush. It also seems to me that everyone is pretty happy about how Matt Roth played too, ecept those that don't play with him or coach him. Notice he got significant time in our goaline defense...serious responsibility there. Overall, I don't think we need to worry very much, I think Nick, the defensive specialist has a place for both.

We are not strictly a 3-4 team as of yet. It takes time to build a 3-4 defense because you need to get all the right personel. I think eventually we will play the 3-4 more than the 4-3 but not right now because of lack of personel.

Its sunday afternoon in MAY with no news and Im basically just making conversation

Listening to Zach's PC last week, he said he liked playing both D's because the O had no idea what they were gonna lineup against and it gave the Dolphins D an edge. I agree, the more your can dictate the better you odds of success. Instead of O's dictataing what will happen against our D it's the other way around. Basically smart football. It also explains why with so many weak areas on our team last year we were still able to win the last six games. It shows that it isn't the players as much as it is the system and believeing in the system.

Manual Wright isnt susposed to be a Nose Tackle. He susposed to be a DE or DT depending on the front. He's 6'6", and should be in the range of 315 or so pounds, like Richard Seymour, but he's not really been cooperative.

Matt Roth appears undersized for his role, but he appears to be in the process of bulking up. He was 278 last year, which is up quite a bit from what he was in college, and he's reportedly looking bigger then before this year. If he's 6'3"-6'4" 285-290 pounds, he'd be well within range for the position.

Matt Roth is probabaly better off playing at a higher weight anyway. In college he was an open end, and more of a pure pass rusher, but he beat his man physically. He would knock blockers off balance and use power oriented moves to get into the backfield.

If Manuel Wright does get back in the 315 range, do you see him and Rodrique Wright/Kevin Vickerson as the ends in future 3-4 alignments? That has been my theory on them...just interested in yours.

Well, sure, if they pan out. That's up in the air at this point. Only Matt Roth and Manny Wright have really shown anything on the field, and both of them have had downsides to them.

I think Manuel Wright, Kevin Vickerson, Matt Roth, and Rodrique Wright are all going to be in the same rotation, based on their skill, body types, and how they've been used. 3-4 DE is part of the rotation, but these guys also end up playing 4-3 closed end/undertackle, and defensive tackle in nickel and dime package.

Because we don't play a strict 3-4 defense. We play a defense with equal 3-4 and 4-3 looks, so you have to have lots of different personnel. Granted, we don't have enough of the big nose tackles and 6'5 260 lbs. linebackers yet, but Saban had to address the secondary and the offense first. Besides, I think we have the LBs right now to make the 3-4 work. We have a lot of different linebackers that specialize in different things, i.e. Keith Newman (pass rushing), Donnie Spragan (playing the run) and Sedrick Hodge (excells in pass coverage). Be patient. The man definitely knows what he's doing.
