Corner the Biggest Need?

Can Barron play on the boundary? thats where we need Db help. Kohou is fine in the slot but we don't want him on the boundary. I wouldn't mind trading down and taking Barron around pick 20.

We could also wait until round 2 and take Amos or Porter.
Barron can definitely play boundary. He had the best coverage grade of any corner in this draft and 679 of his 971 snaps came at boundary corner. 122 snaps in the slot and 142 in the box.
In 2023, he played mostly slot, and his coverage grades while still good were not as elite as they were in 2024.

And he’s an athletic specimen

Texas played almost entirely zone defense in his time there. I would prefer Johnson simply from a fit standpoint. He is 3” taller with an overall bigger frame and around the same weight. Plus he is only slightly less athletic than Barron.

I read somewhere that he has the potential to be a swiss army knife in the secondary
The thing about Swiss Army Knives is, yes they are versatile (can do many different things) in general, but they aren't as good for any one job as a quality tool dedicated for one specific task or situation.

You know the old saying, "jack of all trades = master of none".

If the season stated today, Kohou, Bonner or Smith might be Miami's starter opposite of Ramsey.

Of course, there's always a chance that a young player steps up. But that's a huge question at this point and a position that Grier values.

Free agency has just started, so maybe Grier makes another move but Miami has roughly $8 million in cap space.

So, maybe it means drafting a corner? Hunter is the top rated corner/wide receiver, but also mocked top 5 and sometimes even first overall. Johnson is probably the next off the board, possibly making it to Miami.

Barron is an older prospect, but likely a first rounder. Amos might be next, somewhere in round 2.
Duck played well last year and think he’s better than Bonner for boundary. Kohou is a slot CB. I could see us signing another CB in FA looking for a vet minimum or doing another arestructure. I could also see us drafting one in the 1st or 2nd. We have a lot of needs.

A lot depends on what Weaver thinks of the young guys, including Cam Smith. If he likes them as a group, a low cost vet is a possibility.

IDK what to think of Smith. I have my doubts. There are those that say he was held back by VF and/or injuries. I'm starting to get the impression he either just isn't focused, or lacking in the mental aspect when it comes to adjusting assignment responsibilities quickly on the fly. Maybe a perfectly capable man cover corner, but if he can't play more complex zone schemes, he can't play. OCs would see that liability, and destroy him.

Duck does not have the wheels to play boundary corner, That started to show up later last year once teams had the 'book' on him. I like the kid but there's a reason he was an UDFA.

Well we signed a vet CB today. I think they answered our questions. Still think we draft a CB high
