Cornerbacks- How they stack up, by the numbers...

I saw some love here for Talib, who I absolutely hate.. And it wasn't only because I saw these numbers/stats, but I never liked his game..

But anyway, forget about Talib.. After seeing the praise for him it inspired me to look for the stats regarding the CB's in this draft- at least the top ones.. And I found this stats last season)... I personally think we really need to target a corner in one of the 2nd round picks (or if we miraculously get a 1st round pick for JT, or even if we move up).

So take a look and compare.. I hope this is insightful for you all.. here we go (in no particular order)-

Terrell Thomas - Ranked ninth on the team with 45 tackles (31 solos), adding a 15-yard sack and 4.5 stops for losses of 29 yards…Caused three fumbles and recovered another…Deflected seven passes and gained 44 yards on four interception returns (11.0 avg)…Had 57 passes targeted into his area, holding the opposition to seventeen catches for 149 yards (8.76 yards per catch) and one touchdown…Only 29.82% of those throws were caught and he allowed just 2.61 yards per pass attempt.

Antoine Cason - Started all twelve games at weak-side cornerback, ranking third on the team with a career-high 71 tackles (56 solos), including a 6-yard sack and four stops for losses of 12 yards…Caused two fumbles and deflected a team-high fourteen passes…Tied Nate Ness for the team lead and both ranked second in the league with five interceptions…Gained 164 yards with two interceptions on those five pass thefts…Made 56 of his stops vs. the pass, coming up with 26 third-down hits, including six in run support…Also made one fourth-down stop and tackled the opponent four times for no gain…Made seven of his tackles inside the red zone…Of the 73 passes targeted to his area, the opposition caught 23 (31.5%) for 258 yards (11.2 avg), two touchdowns and twelve first downs (held the opposition to 3.53 yards per pass attempt)…

Reggie Smith -Ranked fourth on the team with 78 tackles (57 solos), adding an 8-yard sack and seven stops for losses of 26 yards…Returned a fumble recovery 61 yards for a touchdown and gained 48 yards on three interception returns while also deflecting eleven passes…The opposition completed just 21-of-60 passes targeted into his area (35.0%) for 231 yards (11.0 yards per completion/3.85 yards per pass attempt), as he allowed one touchdown

DRC - Started all eleven games at left cornerback, as he recorded 37 tackles (28 solos) with two stops for losses of 8 yards…Recovered two fumbles and gained 16 yards on four punt returns…Deflected eleven passes and intercepted two others for 140 yards in returns and two touchdowns…Set the school season-record by blocking four kicks…Gained 806 yards with a score on 33 kickoff returns (24.4 avg)…Also saw brief action on offense, rushing twice for 16 yards while coming up with a 38-yard reception… Made nineteen of his plays on third-down action, including sixteen vs. the pass…Of the 60 passes targeted into his area, he held the opposition to 22 (36.7%) receptions for 262 yards (11.91 avg per completion), three touchdowns and an average of 4.37 yards per pass attempt.


Mike Jenkins - Started all thirteen games at right cornerback, as he was part of a secondary that ranked eighth in the nation in pass efficiency defense (105.27 rating) and 34th in pass defense (212.08 ypg)…Recorded a career-high 41 tackles (31 solos), four stops for losses of 17 yards and a quarterback pressure…Deflected twelve passes and intercepted three others for 41 yards in returns (13.7 avg)…Took over kickoff return duties later in the year, gaining 213 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts (30.4 avg)…Had 68 passes targeted into his area, as the opposition caught 28 of those throws (41.18%) for 348 yards (12.43 avg) and three touchdowns…Defended fifteen passes and prevented his main pass coverage assignment from getting to 25 other tosses…


Leodis McKelvin - Started all twelve games at left cornerback, coming up with 60 tackles (50 solos), including 2.5 stops for losses of 6 yards…Caused three fumbles and recovered another, advancing that turnover 36 yards…Deflected nine passes and intercepted two others for minus 9 yards…Led the league and ranked fourth in the nation with 436 yards and three touch-downs on 25 punt returns (17.44 avg)…Finished third in the Sun Belt with 33 kickoff returns for a school season-record 765 yards (23.2 avg), topping his own mark of 634 yards in 2006…Led the team and ranked eighth in the conference with 1,228 all-purpose yards…Had 70 passes targeted into his territory, as the opposition caught 34 of those tosses (48.57%) for 407 yards (11.97-yard average per completion/5.81-yard average per attempt), no touchdowns and eleven first downs, as he prevented the receivers from getting to 25 throws while breaking up eleven others (nine deflections/two pass thefts)…

Chevis Jackson
44 tackles (34 solo) with 3 stops for losses of 34 yards, 21 passes defensed (16 break-ups, 5 Int) 52 yards on the 5 Int's, 82 passes targeted and only 21 balls were caught for 230 yards (10.95 yards per completion/2.8 yds per att.) Qb's had only a 25.61% completion percentage.

CHARLES GODFREY
Started all 12 games at right cornerback for Iowa. 2nd team all Big Ten, recipient of the Coaches appreciation award. Recorded 65 tackles (42 solo)...Deflected 9 passes and ranked third in the conference with 5 interceptions for 33 return yards. His main pass coverage assignment caught a total of 15 passes for 117 yards (7.8 avg) vs. Godfrey, who saw a total of 40 balls caught in his area for 298 yards (7.45 avg)...Did not allow any touchdown receptions.

Aqib Talib - Started all year at left cornerback and also held the distinction of starting on both offense and defense in the same game vs. Kansas State…Ranked sixth on the squad with 66 tackles (42 solos), including 3.5 stops for losses of 8 yards…Deflected thirteen passes and had five interceptions, as he set a school season-record with 195 yards in returns and tied another mark with two pass thefts for touchdowns…On offense, he caught eight of thirteen passes thrown to him, good for 182 yards (22.8 avg) and four touchdowns…Also rushed once for a 6-yard loss…Returned two punts for 21 yards (10.5 avg)…Had 92 passes targeted into his area, with 47 (51%) being caught by the opposition for 459 yards (9.77-yard average per completion/4.99 yards per pass attempt) and a touchdown…

Brandon Flowers - Stats currently being compiled ..

Tracey Porter - Started every game, ranking second in the league and tied for 18th in the nation with six interceptions for 137 yards in returns…Made a career-high 83 tackles (63 solos) with a 9-yard sack and 5.5 stops for losses of 18 yards…Recovered two fumbles, returning one 76 yards for a touchdown…Deflected four passes and ranked tied for third in the Big Ten with 254 yards on 23 punt returns (11.0 avg)…The secondary ranked 81st in the nation in pass defense, allowing 243.69 yards per game, as the opposition caught 53 of 91 passes (58.24%) targeted into Porter's territory, good for 679 yards (12.81-yard average per completion/7.46-yard average per attempt) and five touchdowns..

There are many other factors to these stats like what kind of talent they have around them on defense. By those stats Terrell Thomas would seem like the obvious choice. But he also had Sedrick Ellis, Lawrence Jackson, and Kieth Rivers around him among others. Now say a guy like Tracy Porter doesn't really have any other NFL type talent around him.

But I agree with you, I am not a fan of Aquib Talib.

Credited with 23 third-down stops, including 21 vs. the pass. Started every game this year at corner back. His size, attitude and fluid hips are his greatest attributes. .

great post!! I worked with the IU football team this fall as a student athletic trainier and saw Porter and WR James hardy on a daily basis.

My overall opinion of porter is he isn't worth a 2nd round pick and probably not the first pick in the third round either. He cant tackle, at all, poor technique, not physical enough, he does have some return ability but he'd only be the 3rd or 4th best returner on this team, I dont see him ever being more than a nickle corner in the nfl and thats if he reaches his full potential.

Id be disappointed if the dolphins took him

Interesting... this is exactly the scouting report I have been reading in regards to Porter.

The answer at CB is Vontae Davis, NEXT YEAR.

I love Godfrey, but I think he will end up playing safety in the NFL. He played both in college. He is also considered by many the best ST's tackler in this draft class.

Yeah I agree.. I laugh at fans here who put Cason as our 2b pick in their mock drafts..

What a pathetic joke.. Cason was the #1 corner coming into last year. He didn't do anything to drop his stock during the season and people think he will go late in the 2nd round?

Makes you wonder how old some of these posters are. It's like being in a nursery school sometimes.

Seriously, I saw a recent BPA from Mayock and I think he had him in the late 40's or early 50's . . . and had several CB's ahead of him like Porter, Flowers, Smith and Molden to name a few . . . . hey I have seen the kid play for several years . . . and he can play CB . . . he may not have that top end speed . . . but he has some outstanding cover skills . . . . I honestly hope for the JT trade so we can get Long, Groves and Cason . . . all by pick 32 . . . but hey who knows what is gonna happen.

The great thing about this draft is that there is incredible depth at CB. There are guys falling off of the radar that have the ability to be quite good corners in this league. Guys like Orlando Scandrick, Jake Ikegwonu (nah I can't spell it), Tyvon Branch, etc. that aren't going in the first 3 rounds that really can become good players. Look at Asante Samuel, he was great ... and a 4th rounder if I recall correctly.

I hope we end up with 3 CB's in this draft, one in the 2nd round (Cason, Jenkins or Porter would be great), and one in the 6th round where we have 2 selections. Any of the late guys I mentioned at the top of my post would do quite nicely.

Someone mentioned BP doesn't usually take CB's until the 3rd or later. Then again, he doesn't usually go for O-lineman in the 1st either, tho J-Long made sense given the circumstances.

Either way, gotta like the depth at CB this year and my guess is a 3rd or 4th rounder.

They wanted to take a closer look at Porter perhaps because they anticipate he'll fall, but who knows if they actually like him or not.
