It seems the #1 pick might be more enticing to a team if the player they want is already under contract (especially if he were to sign a deal less than the guy picked #1 in last year's draft)

If so, it would be an incredible move by Ireland/Parcells (although I would rather they keep Long)

I guess it could happen, but I highly doubt it. If really think Jake Long is the guy they want, and it appears they will get him.

could happen if the Chiefs or Rams decide that they can't live without him. I think he'll stay a Dolphins though

screw the RAMS...we will get him and check out this starting line

RT- Vernon Carey
RG- Justim Smiley
C- Samson Satele
LG- Drew Mormino
LT- Jake Long

R and R will have fun with that mammoth line

I do like the look of that line... would love to see R Shuenning and K Barton drafted to compete for the LG spot and back up the tackles

umm if the dolphins signed long then traded him we would get hit with a HUGE cap hit because we would have just paid a huge signing bonous to him.

yes that cap hit would be astronomical.

Do you know this for sure? Is there any chance that the bonus could be delayed until after the draft? I've never seen this happen but it seemed like an interesting possiblity. Kind of like the speculation of the Browns signing D Anderson just to trade him

Ummmm no we wouldn't because rookie 1st round picks don't get signing bonuses anymore. They get roster and option bonuses in order to circumvent the rookie pool.

The trade "could" happen but probably won't.

That line needs an upgrade at LG, but otherwise looks really nice.

I'm pretty sure we'll be drafting a guard in the middle rounds.

Ozzy rules!!

I agree with Long but i have to believe we will pick up a LG as well. Mormino was a late pick and was hurt all year. He hasn't done anything to warrant a starting job yet. If we pick up a solid LG - wow what a line transformation! These guys would all be young and can stick together for awhile. Finally - no more picking up the retread vets for a stop gap approach.

The rumor is that the contract being offered has no signing bonus. There is a roster bonus attached to it so the Dolphins would not be hit with that cost or be obligated to pay that. I think anyway...LOL

It could happen, without a huge cap hit. Several NFL teams are opting to give roster bonus's instead of signing bonus's, though it is still guanteed money. The fins could sign J. Long with a roster bonus due Sept. 1, then turn around and call the Rams, Falcons and Chiefs (all teams rumored to be interested in J. Long) and say he didn't cost as much as Russell did last year, are you interested? It would make sense economically and also allow them to move down only a couple of spots and pick up another pick.
