Wouldn't it make sense to let Patterson go considering his injury history and 5.4 million dollar cap hit if retained. To me it would make more sense to let Clemons walk and use that money on retaining Carroll and grabbing an upgrade at safety like Jairus Byrd or TJ Ward. We would still have nice depth at CB with Grimes (assuming he's retained), Carroll, Taylor, Davis, Wilson. If that scenario doesn't work then how about replacing Patterson with Sam Shields if he walks. To me the safety position needs to be upgraded more so than CB, but see Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor for the Seahawks and what a difference they make on that defense. If Jones comes back to form and we bring in a guy like Byrd or Ward it would make a lot of sense. Thoughts?

Clemons really isn't that bad, keep him until we are in position to draft our own Earl Thomas

Restructure Patterson...If its good for the team.

If he does not restructure.. the Fins would be crazy ti keep him.

When healthy he was fantastic..

I love the idea of Sam Shields. Cutting Patterson and Moore would give Miami around $9 million more to play with.

I dont mind Clemmons but he dropped SO MANY picks. Easy picks too, and him and Jones play well together. I would like to keep Patterson, but only if he can restructure his deal and we have to bring back Grimes. Byrd and Jones as safteys would be LETHAL.

I think I'm in the minority, but I think Patterson played like a $5 million a year CB last year when healthy. If he is truly over the groin injury, I think he is worth keeping. We wont find a better CB in free agency for cheaper.

The key is when healthy. When he was on the field he was very good. If they feel the injury was an anomaly then keep him, if not restructure or cut and re-sign.

You keep Clemons.

He is a starter quality FS. Not every position on the field needs to have a super-star caliber player. Actually, thats bad. When contract time rolls around super-star players want super-star money, which teams can only afford a handfull.

Clemons is your typical "play it safe" FS. Never lets man behind him, makes the sure tackles, makes the high percentage plays. On the other hand, Jones should be our play-making safety.

This is the same argument people have against Koa Misi. "Misi sucks, he never comes up with big plays". Agreed, but Misi makes all the right plays, no risks.

You cant restructure 1 year left on a contract. You could cut and resign him, but then you run the risk of other teams driving up the price, and he will have suitors in free agency. If they plan on renegotiating with Patterson, cutting him a day before we need to get under the cap would give Miami the most leverage.

And I'd look at getting replacements for Clemons and Jones at both safety spots.

Agree with Clemons, but I would try and re-sign him at a good team contract. He is solid, just not spetacular. Jones got exposed this year as he was down in the box more than 2012. Like Wheeler he is better playing downhill keeping things in front of him instead of moving back. The front seven couldn't stop the run so Jones was down in the box more often than not.

And why can't he restructure with only one year left?

I agree. He was great when healthy. He clearly must understand the business of football. Restructure is his only option.

Restructure is his only option.

Restructuring a contract involves converting current year's salary into a bonus, and then spreading that bonus out over the remainder of a contract to alleviate the current years cap hit. Being that he only has 1 year left on his contract, "restructuring" isn't an option. I think what you guys are talking about involves voiding his old contract (essentially waiving him) and offering him a new contract at a reduced rate. If so, he could refuse and that will allow him to test free agency.
