I'm not sure where this scorn for Vernon Carey comes from, but it's not particularly reasonable. When Carey was on the field, he did alright. Not bad, not good, alright. It's not anywhere near rare for an O-linemen to not start his first season.
Wannstedt for whatever reason did not play him. Last time I checked, Dave Wannstedt no longer is an NFL coach, and this is directly as a result of his inability to properly analyze talent.

Vernon is ALWAYS at least a half count behind everyone else coming off the ball. He is a full step late getting to his combo block and causes the guard he is blocking with to get shoved inside because the guard is responsible for half the guy and when Vernon doesn't show up the guard's leverage is non existant. This also screws the guard up cause he (the guard) doesn't know when to leave that block and go to the lb because by now Vernon is stomping all over the guard's feet. He has a lot of work to do to even be close but they are giving him every opportunity to show up.
