Our pass defense has struggled mightily this year and one of the main culprits has been big plays given up by the secondary. While some of the struggles can be blamed on a lackluster pass rush, opposing QBs have been able to easily diagnose our coverages, find the one-on-one matchups, and exploit the matchup for big plays.

I wonder if Mike Nolan has thought about going to a Cover 2 look more often. At least with the Cover 2, our safeties will be deep enough to minimize the long pass and our corners would be able to worry more about keeping the play in front of them. While the middle zone would open up a little more for tight ends and seam routes, I would argue that we're getting gashed there anyway.

At this point in the season, it's about limiting the damage with simple schemes that allow the players to lineup and simplify their jobs.

Vontae out with a sore hammy was the problem.

I like the cover two and more so with the Tampa two where the MLB drops deeper into coverage. However, for it to work you have to be able to rush four men that can pressure the QB and outside of Wake and Taylor (old legs) Miami's D Line are all DT's. The cover two is designed to keep plays in front of the defenders and them make a break on the ball or swarm to it so it's a kind of bend but don't break mentality until you get into the redzone where most switch to a man coverage. Nolan has run the cover two a lot in nickle situations, but the problem is Miami's safeties continue to bit on short routes, play fakes and take bad angles where they are not protecting against the big play. This all goes back to coaching and they sloppy practice habits.

We cannot get there with 4. Must blitz. Get crazy.

Our safties are just not good enough in coverage point blank..

When you play cover 2 zone, your divinding half of the field...

When you play the quaulity quarterbacks that are in the NFL today most quarterbacks and Wide rec' reconize cover 2 and exploit it..

Matt Stafford did it last night and so did Aaron Rodgers..

Cover 2 is a great d for when your team is winning, you make the other team one dimensoinal and do alot of variations of the standard cover 2..

Most of these posters are right tho, you have to be able to get pressure with 4...Miami cant get enough pressure with 4 and we are playing press man to help out the pass rush...Can you imagine if we were playing a lax zone like cover 2?

Plus we cant tackle..In all defense tackling is very important but in the cover 2 its stressed even more..

Lol a Cover 2 with Reshad Jones and Yeremiah Bell.

Lol.

Lmao.

Hahahah

We actually have used a cover 2 quite a bit, and seem to get burnned every time. With Reshad Jones thinking he's a LB, and Yeremiah Bell losing a step, the cover 2 has been a disaster for us. See the Andre Johnson TD in the Houston game for a good example. Also, we are getting no pressue unless we are blitzing, and pressure is essential for a cover 2.

I hate the cover-2, primarily because it was Dick Jauron's preferred defense. Buffalo played it like Indy plays it, with quick but smallish defenders. It's also a more passive/reactive defense than others, so it works best for teams that can get big early leads and force the opposition to take chances -- like Indy with Peyton can do.

The problem is that smurf defenders suck, especially on run D! Another problem is that cover-2 seems to not be a "clutch" type of defense; unless your D is filled with superstars like Freeney and Sanders, it doesn't seem able to come up with big stops late in the game. It also seems to require certain types of players that just don't seem capable of adapting to other systems well.

Of course, this might all be a Jauron perversion of the system because Jauron was definitely the most risk-adverse HC in the NFL in the last couple of decades, but I'd find something else.

Lol a Cover 2 with Reshad Jones and Yeremiah Bell.

I'm so happy you mentioned YB. They guy has been getting a pass around here for too long he's sucked for the last 3 years and has never been about to cover anybody.

Vontae being out and both safeties being terrible have been the cause of the embarrasing play of the secondary. I don't care what scheme you come out with Reshad Jones will still suck and Bell is only good at certain things(which he isn't as good at anymore). With Vontae back and if they'd replace Jones with Clemens I think the defense would actually be much improved and I know, I know... the suck for Luckers don't want to hear that.
