Is it normal for a safety to give a linebacker help over the top when covering a tight end? Or is it normal for safeties to help double cover a wide receiver?

I would hope it depends on who the TE and WR are...

My question is really geared toward neither, meaning neither the TE or WR are a huge name or a game breaker. In other words, If all things were equal.

well that's easy

It totally depends on the defensive play.I mean, the DE could easily drop back to cover the Tight end, with the outside linebacker helping over the top and the safety could blitz no? It just depends on the defense called and what the offense is showing ya...

it depends on what the coverage is. if it is "0" coverage (meaning no deep safety) the safety are up to blitz or man up on some other rec or back. what i want to know is why is zack being left manning up on te's and backs that are far quicker and faster than him?

It depends on what coverage you are running. If you are running a Cover 1 (man free), the strong safety typically covers the TE and the LB's cover the back. In a cover 2 (and there are many types of cover 2's, but in the typical Cover 2 shell), the LB's are mostly responsible for the hook/curl zone and the middle of the field. If the TE goes deep middle, the MLB should cover him with a safety rolling over if they are not in coverage on the outside halves. In a Cover 2 man, a LB has the TE man up, and the safeties are to help depending on their proiroty. In a cover 3, the safety has the midlle of the field, and the LB's have the flat and the hook/curl, though the hook/curl is usually open in this coverage. These are the most typical coverages. Cover 4 man has DB's on all the WR's, usually dropping deep.

i don't think he is (which is the reason his days are numbered here even if he were 28 and not 33, he is too much of a liability in man coverage). i think what you're seeing is zach playing a zone and reading the play then running with whoever comes through his zone. if it's a combination route, say between a wr and a te the obviously zach will run with the te.

If you're referencing to the TD pass vs Tenn, Zach had excellent coverage. It was just an amazing throw and catch. I see allot more open receivers covered by our DB's than those covered by Zach. Don't believe me, just review the last game and tell me how many yards that Drew Bennett could of had. Scary. We got lucky at home against a horrible team.

dude we all love zach but let's face it. he's a liability in coverage. he's 5'11" he can't cover 6'4" TEs. that's what enables a great throw and catch. and yes, if collins was accurate we would have lost that game for sure because the swift-footed bennett was beating daniels like a red-headed step child all day long.

travis daniels either wasn't ready to come back or just isn't fast enough to play corner in the NFL. the swift-footed drew bennett had daniels beat several times yesterday by a yard or more. thankfully collins couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat or bennett would have torched us and the titans would have won. on the int, daniels was again trailing and would have easily been beaten by a good throw.

So you want to get rid of our leading tackler the heart of the defense because he can't handle being isolated on a TE deep downfield? Thats just genious, I would have thought more along the lines of the coordinators making sure he never gets isolated 1 on 1 with a TE deep downfield so he could play to his strengths closer to the line but I guess that's just stupid thinking. :shakeno:
