Coyle: Defense has 'chance to do something special'

The d-line is the strength of the unit, however I think fans are really going to enjoy the energy of Grimes, Finnegan, Jones and Delmas in the secondary. I think Will Davis, Jamar Taylor and Walt Atkins are going to really learn a lot from Grimes, Finnegan and Delmas.
Agree who do think has the capacity to step up and be those other two guys this year?

Speed package was effective until Wake got hurt and they had to stop using it. They never went back to it after Wake was back on the field.

We were in the bottom 10 in nearly every area on defense last year. Yeah the offense didn't hold the ball as much as some other teams but it wouldn't have mattered if we had the best offense in the league we wouldn't have been elite last year. After 3 games last year we were 3-0 and our defense was close to last in every area except points.
Points are important, I will not argue that, but giving up 60 yards in field position every drive and keeping them out of the endzone does not equal "ELITE". Getting teams off the field on 3rd down and collecting 3 and outs are what makes defenses elite. Seattle only gave up 273 ypg while only putting up roughly 26 more yards per game on offense. Their offense wasn't that much better than ours but their defense was worlds better than ours.
Our defense has some good parts, but we have to get a lot better at the LB positions to even be considered while talking about elite defenses. A case could be made that our offense would have been a lot better if our defense would have gotten them the ball more often as well. It works both ways. Our offense was ranked 27th our defense 21st. Our offense wasn't the only thing keeping our defense from being top 5 or even top 10 for that matter.

I have a good feeling about Misi. I can't really put my finger on it but something just seems there with him and Mike linebacker.
Outside of the linebackers the D is deeper this year. We no longer have Soliai, who was great against the run but strictly a two down player, Mitchell can play all 3 downs. We've got a good rotation that's two-deep on the D-line. Jamar Taylor is becoming the player I hoped he would be when he was drafted and Jenkins is also having a solid camp at linebacker. I think the depth is good on D, better than last year. If they execute (mainly the linebackers since that was our biggest issue last year) maybe they can give the offense a short field to work with so the offense doesn't have to drive 75+ yards for a score all the time.

The defense can be good to very good, but not special. The bend, but don't break philosophy prevents that from happening. It is not an awful strategy, but you cannot be "great" with that type of thinking.

Taylor is also becoming a good player right in front of our eyes.

Delmus, and Chris McClain. LOL yeah I know he might not even make the team but McClain can be explosive if put in the right situations. He is one of the guys I can't wait to see play a preseason game. I think he might really come on towards the end of camp. Guess we will have to wait and see. We need a LB to be one of the leaders of this defense, and don't see it from anyone else.
You can't expect that to be McCain? You do know he was kicked off the team at Cal? Not to mention ejected at least once from a game for an illegal hit on a QB.
If any LB is going to step up and be a difference its gonna be Misi
