Coyle: Defense has 'chance to do something special'

I have a good feeling about Misi. I can't really put my finger on it but something just seems there with him and Mike linebacker.

WOW, I wished I felt that way. I just have this feeling that once we line up vs the pats on opening week Brady is going to make Misi look like the DE playing MLB that he is. I have a bad feeling the pats are going to expose Misi repeatedly all game long. They motion double TE to match Misi up vs Gronk and it will be easy pitch and catch. His lack of instincts will get him easily confused on misdirection and out of position on delays and draws. If they get the early lead I can see them rushing for over a buck 50 on us quite easily.

An elite D doesn't give up a late td to lose a game.... They get a turnover or get the ball on downs we are not talking about a good D he said ELITE...an elite D doesn't care if the o turns the ball over they go out and get it back they don't care if the o can't score they score an elite D imposes it's will on the opposition..we are not an elite D we are a good D with holes.

Well if that is true explain how Seattle (Elite d) lost to the Cardinals in week 16. They had a 10-9 lead late in the 4th quarter. But they gave up a TD drive and lost 17-10.
Even Elite teams give up leads late in games. Its up to the offense to put the game away. Rules are too slanted toward the offense to stop team every time late in games.
Seattle's offense didn't do their part and their elite D was exposed. That can happen to any team.

If any LB is going to step up and be a difference its gonna be Misi

And we know there is zero chance of that happening. He hasn't made a game changing play since he's been here.

Passing game I can see Misi struggling but against the run Misi was stout...I don't see the Pats running for big yards with the lead. As soon as they get two 3-and-outs in a row Brady will lose patience and go back to passing.

If Misi shows anything in pass defense we'll automatically be a better defense this year.

You can't expect that to be McCain? You do know he was kicked off the team at Cal? Not to mention ejected at least once from a game for an illegal hit on a QB.

yeah I know I was just dreaming. That ejection for illegal hit on the QB was complete BS though. Even the annoucer couldn't believe it. The ref just didn't get a clean look and thought he saw something he didn't. Was a clean hit.

Seattle's Elite D also lost a lead to the 49ers in week 14.

Common theme

Seattle's offense didn't score enough and lost 19-17

And on the flip side 49ers elite D held Seattle's offense down long enough for the 49er's offense to score late and win. 19 points isn't much to win a game with.

The defense can be good to very good, but not special. The bend, but don't break philosophy prevents that from happening. It is not an awful strategy, but you cannot be "great" with that type of thinking.

The 'bend dont break' style can work, and it works for most D's that are supported by O's that can score points.

Hopefully Lazor can help out the D.

Agreed.

In todays (pass happy + flag football) style, anything less than 21 points scored on O is terrible. At the same time any D that can hold opponents to less than 21 points is great.

3 and outs, agaisnt us?? When has that ever happened? Playing the mike, vs playing the outside is a totally different animal. Playing the mike requires instincts that come from years of experience. I will be shocked if Misi isn't abused early and often in the run game when the real bullets start flying. Koa is used to throwing his body in the way to set the edge and hope someone else makes the tackle. He won't be able to get away with that at the mike. I think he will look pretty good during preseason games but once teams start game planning he will have to prove he can rely on instincts that I just don't think he has yet. JMO

I hope you are wrong. :chuckle:

Talk about a jack of all trades for Misi.

From a 4-3 DE in college ball, to 3-4 OLB, to 4-3 OLB, to 4-3 MLB...... sheesh

Rashard Jones definitely has the ability to. I think Olivier Vernon can too. Just had a double digit sack season. Alot of people act like he lucked into it, he needs to prove it wasn'tluck

I would agree with those two, and add in Taylor and Ellerbe, with many likely disagreeing. JMO

That tells me he isn't great at anyone of them, hopefully this latest move will be different

I'll take my chances with their D getting a stop rather than the o coming from behind every day of the week and I am sure they will win most of the time

Well, not really his fault. D scheme changed.

He was a 'small' 4-3 DE in college, who would of played OLB in a power house program (played at Utah).

Dolphins ran a 3-4 for first two years Misi was here, then we switched over to 4-3 and he played OLB, now Ellerbe sucked at MLB so we move Misi over.

If by something special he means get off the field on third and long every once in a while, it may be possible.
