Coyle: Defense has 'chance to do something special'

Delmus, and Chris McClain. LOL yeah I know he might not even make the team but McClain can be explosive if put in the right situations. He is one of the guys I can't wait to see play a preseason game. I think he might really come on towards the end of camp. Guess we will have to wait and see. We need a LB to be one of the leaders of this defense, and don't see it from anyone else.

You haven't been paying any attention to Misi then. He's showing loads of leadership, with a drive I haven't seen from anybody else on this defense besides Wake/Grimes.

Our LBs are going to be very busy, because IMHO our secondary is going to send a lot of action their way.

I'm really excited about this secondary...provided Jones can at least split the difference between his 2012/2013 performances.

Give me a list of MLB's playing right now that could cover a healthy Gronkowski. I can't think of any. The situation you described, could be applied to 99% of the teams in this league.

One thing which would help in not missing tackles. Miami had 116 last year. No time to research the NFL but, in our division, Jets had 102, Bills had 93, and Pats had 84. That certainly changes games.

Wheeler- 18 but to be fair 6 were vs Indy.

Ellerbe- 14

Clemons- 14

Grimes- 10

Jones- 10

Wake- 7

Wilson- 7

Every player misses tackles but, all of the above players were higher than the norm. This needs to be cleaned up.

Now there's some stats I can get behind. Think of how deflating it is for a defense, on a 3rd and 5, to miss a tackle and have a team convert for a first down on you. Missed tackles change everything.

Curious, do you have stats of the 3rd-down percentage Miami allowed compared to the rest of the league? I remember quite a few 3rd-and-long plays last year that teams converted into first downs. That'd be another huge area to improve on with the defense.

haha clueless^

You want to see an elite D by the end of the year? Try putting up more than 19 points a game. The only reason our defense is never ELITE is because our offense is ALWAYS among the worst in the league.

If we could even put up the LEAGUE AVERAGE in offensive points scored our defense would be elite EVERY YEAR.

Get a clue.

Both have an impact on the other.

Good offense keeps the defense off the field and forces other teams into predictable situations (passing a lot when down big, for example). A good defense gives an offense more opportunities to score. And a great defense forces turnovers and gives the offense a short field to work with.

One think I'd like to see Wake get better at is tomahawking at the arm of the QB when getting sacks. He'd gets back there so frequently that it'd have a huge impact if he was able to force more fumbles. Wake has 9 forced fumbles during his career, whereas Robert Mathis had 8 forced fumbles LAST YEAR. Robert Quinn had 7 last year as well.

Olivier Vernon had zero last year. That's definitely a major improvement area with the defense — forcing the ball out and getting turnover situations instead of punt situations.

An elite D doesn't give up a late td to lose a game.... They get a turnover or get the ball on downs we are not talking about a good D he said ELITE...an elite D doesn't care if the o turns the ball over they go out and get it back they don't care if the o can't score they score an elite D imposes it's will on the opposition..we are not an elite D we are a good D with holes.

I never said anything about us having an elite D. It's a good to very good D with a piss poor offense for support. Give them the league average in points scored and we'll see how they fair.

I think we're going to have to survive another year of suspect LB play and hopefully try to draft a stud next year. If you're adept at coach speak all Philbin ever says of Misi is he's working really hard. If thats the best compliment you can come up with its not a good sign imo.

gonna need dion jordan to explode pass rush wise for this d to be special...
