A coach should be judged on how he performs with the players at his disposal. Looking at the pieces in place I can understand why out offense is struggling, but our defense should be one of the Top 5 in league. How do u feel?

Unless Kevin Coyle lobbied for a big money extension for Reshad Jones and demanded the team sign Philip Wheeler, I'm not sure how much of this is really on him.

U really thought this was a top 5 defense at the beginning of the year? I didn't.

I knew this was a talented defensive line but questioned the so called "upgrades" at LB and obviously the CB depth and the lack of playmaking ability for the FS spot. Funny thing is, we've actually gotten decent production out of our CBs all things considered, however we just haven't created enough pressure from the front 7 and our LB group is a terrible tackling unit, made more evident by the absence of Koa Misi. Our DE's did get manhandled in the run game on Monday as well.

Still, Sherman has been terrible all season. From his lack of adjustments, to the inability to figure out short yardage . . . I mean, it's been a disaster.

When your offense can't sustain drives your defense will suffer. Miami's offense has not been good and if you check the overall stats the Miami's opponent offensive stats basically mirror what Miami has produced on offense this year. Miami has scored 21 TD's and they've given up 21 TD's. Field goal attempts are only 3 attempts different. I've seen plenty of times this year where the offense could have picked their D up only to go 3 and out or turn the ball over. It's a symbiotic relationship between both units. When one suffers, invariably so will the other.

I'm pretty sure that Ellerbe could be added to the list plus Patterson being hurt almost all year doesn't help.

Coyles defense has not played up to par but to watch the offense play is sometimes unbearable. With the speed between Miller,Hartline and Wallace not open up this offense is very, very puzzling to me.

I don't disagree with what you're saying but it doesn't explain our propensity for giving up so many first downs on third and long.

I thought going into the regular season or Defense was the strong part of the team....They have been the most disappointing to me, in the Ireland tenure our D as always been able to stop the run...this yr is a joke, teams run on us at will, the only thing that's changed is our LB, early in the yr they were flying around making plays in the back field with an occasional missed tackle, now they don't make any plays in the back field, can't cover anyone and miss more tackles than they make, in addition our D doesn't look to complicated, always the same set with the same type of blitz....and teams are out scheming us....

Our depth is a problem except for the DL, depth I blame on Ireland, everything else in on DC.....

It shocks me every game how gassed they are the 4th qtr. More than any team I've ever seen.

Sherman is working with one the worst tackle tandems the league has ever seen. When you look at the 2 guards they are also below avg. Lamar miller whom I like, is a RB who will not run over people but through gaps created, of which our line cannot do on a regular basis.

Our D on other hand has numerous pro bowl caliber type players. Wake, starks, soliai, Odrick, Jones & grimes.

It doesn't matter really they both stink and both are doing lousy jobs. They can compete for who is doing a worse job and then take pride in that award when they are looking for new jobs in January.

Not sure why anyone thinks this should be a top 5 d. They ahvent been one in a bit and the guy that was shaping that D is no longer here.
Very good dline beyond that no other unit is close to special

It goes the other way around too. Look at how the offense has scarcely had the ball for nearly a quarter and a half against teams like Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Cincy, etc. Sure, a 3 and out is a three and out, but one three and out shouldn't doom this team's offense to that being the only time they see the ball that quarter. With this team's defense, it does.

People aren't blaming the defense as much as they should because we haven't given up the big plays as we have in the past. In their stead, we are doing something ultimately as damaging or worse by allowing teams, regardless of if their team in QB's by Andy Dalton or Mike Glennon, to drive down the field and convert easy first down after easy first down because our team can't seal off the run game and allows first downs to be converted over the middle time and time again, even when it is third and more than ten. The truth is that few people really understand what is happening on defense because the cameras and our eyes follow the ball, but people need to open their eyes to the fact that we haven't been able to hold teams with Thad Lewis and Mike Glennon to less than twenty points, in addition to every team we've faced since week 3, and that simply shows that we are not a good defense.

Offense cannot stay on the field and blows up the momentum with turnovers so much the D can only do so much... Opening drive by TB was crap though...

Our off tackle run defense, perimeter pass defense and inability to stop screen passes has been a chronic problem all season I am not sure if is because of the players (Ireland) or scheme (Coyle). It is probably both.
We seem to start games passive and then dial up blitzes. The intensity goes up and down. If they stayed aggressive all the time, it would probably help.
