“I guess it’s frustrating a bit,” he said of being listed No. 2, “but I’m not overly concerned that it’s going to wreck my performance or wreck my play from here on out.”
And when Richard Marshall is listed ahead of Vontae Davis at cornerback, the coaches mean it, too.
“At this point he’s been more consistent in practice, he’s made more plays,” defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said of Marshall on Tuesday. “But there’s a long way to go in terms of how this thing is going to work out.”
Certainly, Davis has four more weeks to improve his play and make up ground, and he has taken more snaps with the base defense in the past two days. But Marshall being listed as the starter – and replacing Davis in the base defense – is no fluke.
Marshall, entering his seventh NFL season, signed a three-year, $16 million contract with Miami in March and was the only free agent given a multi-year contract by the Dolphins this offseason. Not only can he play outside corner, slot corner and safety, the website Pro Football Focus rated him as the second-best run-stopping cornerback in the league last year.
Coyle has been impressed with Marshall’s attitude so far.
“Richard is one of the most competitive guys I’ve been around,” said Coyle, who spent the previous 11 years as a defensive backs coach in Cincinnati. “He’s got a tremendous focus. He battles each and every play, and takes tremendous pride in his 1-on-1 ability to win the down each and every down. There’s not a snap that he’s out here where he’s not giving everything he’s got and fighting and scratching to win.”
Marshall’s physical abilities have impressed Coyle, too.
“He’s got exceptional quickness, short-area quickness to be able to cover start and stop, change directions,” Coyle said. “Those things have really shown up in camp.”

That sucks for our 1st round pick. Time to shape up. Either way I think Marshall and Davis will ber our starting DBs when Smith gets overpaid and leaves next year in FA.

Good to hear that one Marshall is gonna help our team. Anyone care to wager that VD will not be our starting CB on opening day?

if marshalls really playing that damn well thats a big boost for us...i still don't think its wise though to take vontae off the field in 2 wr sets...marshall and smith for that matter will be tested early and often...going off last season

I've seen people claimimg everything from this being a ploy to motivate Vontae to allowing Vontae to learn the slot position, but Philbins statements in this article should put all that to rest. I do think the coaching staff believes Vontae to be a good player but feel he needs to give a consistent effort in his play as well as in his improvement. I for one feel this is a very warranted and refreshing approach to decision making by our current staff. The best part of all of it is they seem to be oblivious to what media, the fanbase and upper management think when making these decisions. If David Garrard plays and practices better before the season starts he should start. The same is true for Richard Marshall over Vontae Davis, as well as any other players competing on this team. This is the only way for a team to improve, regrdless of the level of talent currently on the team.

HE PLAYS SAFTEY!!!!!
HMMMMMMMMM
INTERESTING

Lets put this in simple terms best four dbs should be on the field.

Vontae is not playing the slot position at all...when they bring all three onto the field, Vontae, Marshall and Smith, Marshall moves inside over the slot and Vontae takes the boundary.

If that's not a direct message to Vontae to show up and produce consistently, I don't know what is.

If that really is the case, we need to trade Smith for some picks then

We can't just lose talent. Especially when we used a high pick on him.

Every single team in the league who has a player they know is likely to leave the next season thinks like this.

If Smith gets paid a ton and starts somewhere else, Miami will get a comp pick for him unless we sign some huge FA. Hence the system. You don't get screwed, you get an extra pick.

I am sure glad that Marshall is playing well, should be solid at corner this year. That being said there is no way you can convince me Davis is the third best corner on this team. Not buying it.
