Coyle's D #1 in "Puttin On The Blitz"

Some of those pressures would have been more effective if we played more press coverage and didn't give these receivers and TE's a running 5-10 yard cushion. Also helps if we have LB"s that can stay with their respective guys. The pass rush only works if the back end of the defense plays accordingly.

Yeah I really never understood the cushion Miami gives opposing receivers. Though I guess it's better giving up 10 yard completions than getting burned deep a lot. It'd probably also be difficult to ask Grimes to do bump and run because he's a little ****.

You hit the nail right on the head!

Coyle's secondary was pretty much crippled all last year. Grimes was the only one playing most of the snaps, and he had an off year.

Jenkins was pretty good in cover, and Misi was OK but missed close to half the plays. NEED to improve. IMO, Jordan can do this IF given the chance.

You hit the head of the nail.

Prior to the 74 yard TD reception by Eric Decker of Jets in the last game of the season our longest TD's allowed by defense was 48 to Allen Robinson and 49 yards to Megatron.
Other than those 3 big plays the defense forced teams to move it down the field in many plays. The old bend but don't break defense. Nothing wrong with that. But you need to make plays when the other team gets to your red zone. We were not very good at stopping them once we got there. In past years we have been good in red zone defense and the strategy had worked well.

Personally I have no problem with them playing off and NOT giving up the big play. But we just need to get back to being excellent in the red zone. And that will fall mostly on the linebacker play which hasn't been there lately. One downside of the bend but don't break is it can limit the number of opportunities that the offense gets in a game. Those long drives by the opponent can eat up some time. Not a huge problem as long as we hold them to FG's

Agree. I would add that the "bend but don't break" approach also wears down our defense, especially if we have injuries and less guys to rotate in. We would also need a stout running defense to stop those teams from ramming it down the throats in the red zone. I think a stout NT and with a healthy Misi, Dion Jordan, and improving Jennings could be much better this year.

I mostly agree but, not on the LB's. I do not have a breakdown of how many TD's our LB's allowed in or out of the red zone. However, for the year, Jenkins allowed 3 TD's, Misi gave up 0. Wheeler had 1, and Trusnik had 2. That was not the problem.

The patchwork secondary Coyle had to work with was. JMO

Colye has taken some heat and deserves credit when due. He blitzed 32% of the time (#10) but, was #1 at putting pressure o the QB. Good job.

And our defense was ranked 17th in the league in QB sacks and 16th in the league in INT's. Sure, he blitzed more than half the teams and seemingly got QB pressure more than any other team but what did it translate into - average. With that being said the need for an upgrade at the DC position is a huge need.

It was both SB. When first Finnagen then Delmas went down and Jimmy Wilson and others were asked to start the unit wasn't the same . They were solid the first half of the year.
As far as the LB i don't think this group ever got settled. Trusnik did better than i expected filling in early on but he's not a starter. Misi was ok the limited times he was available but probably out of position in the middle. Jenkins was solid and Wheeler was Wheeler.
Bottom line we need a starting corner (Taylor always injured) , a middle linebacker and a safety unless they resign Delmas.

Lost me. If we are talking blitz, it worked.

do you have the down break down of the percentages of the blitz ie 1st 2nd 3rd...and do you know how efficient our 3rd down defense was??? down and distance dictates blitz opportunities...

also that doesnt say anything that i saw about effectiveness of the blitz play results just pressures...if those pressures result in screens for chunk yardage or dump offs cause we vacated areas or if the qb recognized them and got the ball out prior to the blitz hitting him i dont think thats a great stat to feel good about...but i also don't know what constitutes a pressure according to pff...pressure that doesnt in the end make a difference is kinda pointless to pimp

pressure without finish as in get off the field doesnt add up to much
