Just a thought of mine and would appreciate any input, but there are always some TEs in the draft that are essentially glorified WRs (Dustin Keller comes to mind) that are usually pretty fast and have good hands but aren't much for blocking. What would you guys think if we drafted one of these guys like Travis Beckum or Cornelius Ingram with the intention of moving them to WR. It would fill our need for a big WR and play more to their strenghts. Would this idea be plausible?

probably would never happen. The reason those guys become TEs is because they are matchup problems. You will almost never put a number 1 CB on a TE (unless it's Gonzo or Gates lining out wide), and most of the time TEs will be covered by LBs or safeties. Beckum and Ingram would be abused as WRs but could be good mismatches at TE.

If a college TE is a tad small, they might move to H-Back though (Like Chris Cooley, but he eventually just became a full blown TE)

sure and we can draft safety's to play corner....worked great with Jason Allen.

why would we when we essentially have one in Joey Haynos ? i don't think there's a TE that would qualify more than him, and be worth a draft pick

I was thinking more of one of these 6'4" 240ish lb guys who runs around a 4.5. That sounds about like Brandon Marshall type area to me.

no thanks. ill stick with ginn, bess and cam underneath. and London and Heynos for the jumpballs. no sense wasting any picks.

If that's what you like maybe we can get WR JaMarko Simmons from Western Michigan in the 7th. He's 6'2" and weighs 240. The guy is actually a wide receiver and I understand he's pretty good.

That may be a good option. I admit I haven't heard of the guy, though. My main point is what is the difference between a 6'4", 235 lb Brandon Marshall who runs a 4.6 and can't block and a 6'3", 240 lb Travis Beckum who runs a 4.5 and can't block. Can anyone seriously tell me that Dustin Keller is anything other than a WR?

cornellius ingram from florida would also be a guy you'd like valandui... 6'4 245 pounds, former basketball player... unfortunately he went down with an injury this year but he could've been the dustin keller or the martellus bennett of this draft, right now the 3rd or 4th round seems about right for him (if he has an ok combine)

I love the idea and it may actually happen this year to a certain extent.

James Casey from Rice once played seven different positions in 1 game.

He is 6'3.7" and weighs 235 lbs and has run a 4.5 something.

He played basebll for a few years so he isn't as young as you would think
coming out for the draft after his sophomore year.

Honestly, we already use our TE's as glorified WR's. People spout praise on Fasano for his blocking, but honestly, it's pretty spotty. David Martin isn't a good blocker either. Both of those guys are big target WR's. We often play a 2 TE set, but with those two as TE's you might as well call them a WR and H-Back. Haynos may not be the receiver those two are, but he's definitely not a blocker.

I think we intended to have a big WR in Wilford, but when that didn't turn out, Pennington just utilizes the TE so well anyway that it was a natural switch to feature the TE's in the passing game and make our 2 TE set a passing set. We have the personnel for it.

As for taking a glorified WR nominally called a TE and reverting him to WR ... I just don't see the point. If we're not going to get a superior athlete with better ups, longer arms, and/or more speed or after-the-catch ability, I think we'd be treading water doing that in the first 4 rounds. After that, we're grasping for straws anyway, so if we think we see talent, sure, go for it.

Athletically (size/speed) there is no difference. Its how you line them up. Brandon Marshall knows how to abuse DB's to get free and get the ball. A guy like Beckum knows how to abuse LB's and sometimes safeties to get free and get the ball. If you put Beckum against a CB consistently, he may not know how to get open or get free because the CB will be too fast and wiley to allow that to happen. TE's are good at what they do, if change that you may not get a good result. In this league its about mismatches, and that's what the TE's are for.

Marshall was a converted defensive back at UCF. Go Knights!!

I really think you nailed it here!! I've thought about this a lot and I think this may actually be theee answer for Miami at possesion receiver.
