I read an article about how the Steelers (without the drama of Parcells) have built a culture of winning. Players apparently actually enjoy the game and have fun and win together as a team. Rooney walks through the locker room and thanks every player (all 53) individually after each game.

When the Steelers loose players to free agency and they have other players waiting in the wing. For example they have a young receiver waiting if Hines is let go. They never missed a beat when Porter left.

Of course our coaches are very smart; they let go Welker when they needed him the most. But the best news of 2008 was despite loosing Jason and Zach the defense was effective. I was very worried about those moves.

I just hope and pray that Ireland and Sporano are building such a culture at the Phins. Johnson, Wannsteadt, Saban and Cameron have been some of the worst things this franchise has withstood. None of them had the character that Sporano is demonstrating; hopefully it will stand the test of times.

I hate to correct someone's spelling but it's SpArano. Not Sporano.

But I hope so to. I think that this franchise is going to win a lot of games...hopefully a couple of those being the big one...over the next 10 years or so.

Welker was gone by the time our current staff took over. Thomas and Taylor, yes, but Welker was a Patriot by then.

Sorry ravimk-you are talking apples and oranges here. The steelers are a product of their environment. If you trace the pitt area back you will see that football is as important to them as college basketball is to North carolina. many great players have come from Pitt, such as Namath and Marino. Football is a lifestyle up there and is followed with a passion. You can transplant this passion to other teams but it will be nessasary to stock your team with men from that area. Sparano is a great coach but the Pitt players were raised that way.I hate to use Hollywood movies for examples but ALL THE RIGHT MOVES gave a great account of their attitudes. Look at Cleveland fans--THE DOG POUND--DIE HARDS. PITT FANS--the same way. they were raised in a hard environment and it shows in their teams. Blue collar is their fan base and they work hard and they play hard. look at Joey P. a couple of years in Pitt and he is a go getter and intense. Miami has South Beach and a bandwagon crowd at the stadium ( when losing the seats really stand out). Football is a lifestyle in Pitt, it is a job in Miami. BIG DIFFERENCE

i think it's more about a winning formula that they continue to practice. Strong d line and strong linebackers and fill in the rest as you can. with a strong D line and linebackers there defense is alway tough and they are always competitive. that is what bill is working on now. He concentrated on the d line last year and plugged in other positions where he could. This year he will concentrate on the linebackers and plug more holes where he can. We will be much improved next year. especially against the pass with the added pressure. can't wait

you are correct enduro but i will stand by my post as a reason for the pitt formula. They are born and bred that way. There are many reasons for their success and your post pointed out more good reasons.

IMO, the south Florida sunshile and playful atmosphere did not dampen the winning culture of the Dolphins in the 70's and 80's. Not surprising it was a hard-nosed coach named Shula who created a winning culture. It seems to me the right people are again in place for the Dolphins to exhibit the character it takes to win consistently in the NFL.

What I wish were different was the fan base. I have'nt lived in Miami in many years, but when I did I went to as many games as I could. I still plan vacations around the Dolphin's schedule so I can see a game when I'm visiting (even planned my honeymoon to coinside with the Fins being home). I would love to see the stands full every game.

Miami got the best winning % percentage of all time with 58.3, without the 1 - 15 season we would be the only team with over 60% wins.

Ironically what started the Steelers toward their march to a successful franchise was the hiring of Chuck Noll as head coach in 1969. His 1st year record...1 - 13 he did not get a winning record until his 4th year.

You make it seem like all of the Steelers were born and raised in Pittsburgh...

I agree the local Pitt environment delivers a fan base, however the player and coaching culture is driven by ownership.

Wayne H. got a free pass because he was ready to spend a lot of money without the attitude and interference of Jerry Jones. However his decision making was flawed for a long period of time. I did think Jimmy Johnson was a good call, however in hindsight a terrible mistake.

A thoughtful, patient, insightful and decisive owner is the first step in defining the winning culture at the phins. He should make a change in football leadership when he notes that there is a breakdown in critical skills for longer term winning and not based on one season winning percentage; aka Steelers with Cowher. Ireland and Sp (i don't want to misspell again) are the key now to the future of the dolphins. I think the fickle fan base is fixed with consistent winning.

Not only ownership but stability in the front office and head coach. Everyone in the Steelers front office are on the same page when it comes to personnel. The Steelers culture of winning is also helped by the fact they have had only three head coaches in the past 30 years and only six head coaches in the past 50 years. The Dolphins have had six head coaches in the past 10 years.

one cannot compare as the biggest effect that is had is by a ownership and its commitment to winning. steelers have been owned by the rooney family for ever and they have stability and commitment to win. Check the patriots who where a laughing stock till the kraft`s took over. the difference is both the kraft`s were season ticket holders who sat on the benches and watched the patriots loose year after year.when they got hold of the team it was a fan running a team .so its possible to change the culture if you get a ownership that is commited. Its like one of the fans owning the dolphins and getting to run it. If that happens wouldn`t the team win.

The Steelers have done a very good job putting together a winning team for an extended period of time, but, I remind you; They have more superbowls than ANY team in the NFL.....ANY team in the NFL. The Miami Dolphins have one of the winningest cultures NFL history. If you just started watching durning the Wanstadt/Saban/Cameron era, you might not think so, but, we do. What you saw this season is usuall right around the minimum level of performance that most of us older school Dolphans are used to and expect. Might I remind you that we posess the only perfect season in football?

Wes Welker was not let go by this staff. He was also let go for a price that was a no brainer to take. There is nothing Wes Welker did for this team that hasn't been matched by those that came after him. Oh...And that whole "Culture of winning" that you speak of, and, how the players on the Steelers like practiceing and playing together? I bet none of those guys has ever been on thier sideline with big moon eyes looking over at an oppositions sideline, wishing he was wearing thier uniform....Like Welker did.

Also, we did not "lose" ZT. He was let go because he did not fit into the 3-4 Scheme. You saw that in Dallas this year. We also did not "lose" JT. He was traded, because this franchise wanted guys that were dedicated to winning and playing team ball, not danceing and refuseing to come in for voluntary camp activitites....Which you expect your leaders to do, IMO.

The culture is fine. Our coaches are fine. They were and are in the process of ripping out the dead parts of past teams and rebuilding the body. We're fine.

I tend to think that our culture of winning is very very high. In the post Shula era we as a team is still very successful. DW had only 1 losing season. In his 4 winning seasons he averaged over 10 wins per/yr. JJ had 4 seasons with us and he averaged 9 wins, and we view them as almost total failures. Saban 7 wins with Cameron the sole complete loss. Overall in the post Shula era we are still courting a winning record, without the Cameron lone losing 1 - 15 season our winning % would be 55.7%, on a lifetime basis only 3 teams sport a better percentage.

With that being said had we won all of our Super Bowls we would have 5, yet that was two decades ago. We still have a winning culture, only 1 trophy per year is given out, we were in a small 1 season lull and hopefully we are out of it.
