Looking at NFL standings there are a few 'cupcake' teams in the NFL this season....I feel qualified to indentify them, having suffered through the 2007 Dolphins season. The distinguishing feature for all of those teams at this point, is 2 or less wins.
They are the Bengals, Raiders, Chiefs, Lions, Rams, Seahawks and 49ers.
Now, I whole heartedly submit to the 'any given sunday' theory, so this is not to say that a game against any of these teams is an automatic win, but they are clearly the bottom of the NFL barrell, and the teams I would want to see on my schedule going forward, and the ones who could help pad your record if you've already played them?
So how does this relate to the AFC East, and more specifically, the Miami Dolphins?
Because contained in that list are 5 remaining out of division games for the Dolphins. Seahawks, Raiders, Rams, Chiefs and Raiders. A whopping 9-31 record combined. That opposed to the generally solid cast of out of division teams we've played so far (combined .500 record). Suffice it to say that the 2nd half schedule looks a lot easier than the front end.
And what about the rest of the teams in the AFC East? Who have they played and who do they have left? Do they have it easy going forward? And have they padded their record, or at least had the oppritunity to pad it, against these lesser teams?
Buffalo - they've played 3 of these cupcakes already, and have 2 left to play. Cupcake record 3-0....against everyone else, 2-3
New England - 3 cupcakes played with a 3-0 record. 2-3 against others.
NY Jests - 2-1 against the cupcakes, 3-2 against everyone else. They lucked out with the schedule by drawing Cincy....so they actually have 1 more cupcake game than the rest of the division. 3 cupcakes remain
What does all this mean? Well to me it says that our 4-4 record is just as, or possibly more, impressive than their 5-3 records. They've each played 3 games against the leagues worst teams, while we've played none of them.
And moving forward, all of our remaining division games will be against one of these teams, while the other teams in our divsion will have a more difficult road to travel with games against Denver, Cleveland, Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Arizona remaining.
